To grill or not to grill, that is the question
OK, I'm bored and redesigning the look of my C4S. Gonna slap an OEM turbo tail on the butt. Porsche in their wisdom to maintain loyalty charges $500 for the black plastic inner grill alone!! What would be the harm of omitting this inner seive, especially in a NA car since we dont have such a grill beneath our existing moveable spoilers in the first place. Whaddya think?

Richard,
The only function I have found with the inner grill is that it breaks up water stream into smaller water beads to prevent any large stream of water entering into the engine bay. It is quit interesting how it work when you run an open hose above the engine cover. If you look carefully you will see that the NA retractable tail have the same plastic lines angled in the same direction as the TT's inner grill.
Also, visually the tail just looks so much better with the inner grill, without the inner grill it looks veyr hollow and empty.
By Design sells them for $320.

Geez,
I hate that hollow and empty look especially when I'm doing a Spring 'color me beautiful' makeover. Thanks for the tip, Robin.
The RSRs are sounding even better with age by the way.

I have seen a number of aftermarket installations use a black screen in place of the black grill. It certainly is a cheaper way to go, and looks fine from a distance, but I chose to use the factory grill, expensive as it is. You can always add the inner grille later, BTW, as all 4 pieces bolt together.
I bought both grilles from M A Shaw when I bought the tail and splitter, as he gave me a good price on them.

Hi Richard, I just went through the same process and found Gert to be considerably cheaper than most dealers in the US. I agree with the other comments, without the grill, it looks hollow and empty, but more importantly I'm not willing to chance any excess water intake into the engine compartment.

OK... doofus alert. I want to remove the grill from the turbo tail to clean it. It's probably really easy, but I don't see the magic "button" that you press to pop it off. Yes, I'm a mechanical doofus.
