I was just pulling your leg a bit. After consulting with DJ, however, I feel it may be best to set up an EKG at the track, prior to giving rides.

I find this topic to be very interesting, as it is probalbly one that many people think about shortly after doing a few DE's.

I am by no means an expert on the topic as I am a novice compared to many of you, but can shed a little light, as I have attended DE's, autoxs,a Kart school, and drove Marks SRF for a few laps (very slowly, as it was not my car). All I can say is rent an SRF! If you are on a budget, it is sooo much fun and you have much more protection than a kart. I saw a horrific shifter kart accident a year ago, and it pretty much cured my curiosity. Mark also pointed out that the cars are almost indestructable, and if you do have any damage you can have it welded & glassed for a fraction of the cost of any Porsche parts (911,993,951,914etc...). No, they are not a 993 but climbing back into my car to do more laps after was dissapointing compared to the SRF. I felt like I was driving a boat.

I absolutely love my 993, but it is like comparing apples & oranges.

I know a guy in my PCA region that almost lost his hand in a karting accident. And another that broke his ribs, he apparently came a bit forward in the seat and the G forces broke 3 or 4 ribs, Ouch!

While I would love to do karting for the excercise and the training I don't think I would race them, especially after talking to some guys that did.

You could buy this fully prepared and sorted '91 C2. It is built for POC class V3 rules. Cost about 75k to develop, asking 45k. Yes, it is better to buy a car someone else built than to do your own, lol!

I will advise the same as a few others. My father and I have had two cars built into racers from bare chassis. It is far cheaper to purchase a built car than to build one yourself. The upside is that by building it yourself you know exactly what you have. IMO... a 951 will give you the best bang for the buck, though as you said it is not a 911.

I raced karts in Australia, fun fun and more fun. But if your the unlucky one that gets punted, it can be bad. A young father who raced with his son (not that same time) got hit, ran up the bank in his 125cc kart, started barrel rolling along the bank. Six weeks later when he left the hospital he was mentally and physically handicapped with no chance of 100% recovery. That's a harsh life story.

BUT, get a bunch of friends and some cheap karts and it's the cheapest door to door racing you will get!! Imagine entering a hairpin corner at about 70-75mph and looking over at your friend (who is grinning as big as you) to see who will brake last? And then laughing for the next 5 corners because your friend went spinning off into the sand in a ball of tire smoke. It's moment like that I still remember because it's such a blast. I was lucky that I lived 10 minutes out of the city and 10 minutes from the track.

With all that said, I will be hitting the hire karts some time late this week or weekend at
Dromo 1 (no affiliation) if anyone wants to come along for a blast. No where near as fast but same principals, teaches you how to be faster under brakes and through corners. Who's up to test their skills and speed?

Cheers guys,
Dylan.

I keep on wanting to inject in but E. J. is taking the words right out of my mouth.

After six months of agonizing what P-car to buy to go racing next year, then realizing that, sure, I can get a 964 or 993 Cup Car, but then I have to maintain it $$$...

I am getting my SCCA license this fall by renting an SRF. Assuming the experience is all I've heard it is, I'll be ordering a brand new one ($24.5k plus $900 shipping), putting it together myself (believe it or not, I find this stuff fun), then racing starting next year.

I've found that the 20+ car class at every SCCA / MARRS race is great. Since the cars are spec and only suspension and paint are adjustable, there's great fun on the track. Also, off the track the comraderie seems to be good.

I'll just be sad that it's not a P-car.

So, in another two years or so, I'll sell it (did I mention that used ones go for $17k to $22k?) and get either a Radical or a 993 Cup Car. Or so the plan goes...

I'll put an update here after driving the SRFs at Summit and/or VIR this fall during school.

Sorry for posting twice..you can tell i don't have enough practice! I am flying tomorrow to Dubai for a Kart race on 125cc, after reading this post, I am having second thoughts.. Not the first time I race karting, speed and 24 hour endurance races, however never seriously considered the risk factor in karting, besides some badly bruised ribs. Probably should stay home enjoying milder G forces in my 993.
