Does it crank? What year? Need more details.

Yes what year? Could be clutch micro switch or starter relay. Depending on year.

Is your immobilizer in proper working condition? Try locking, then unlocking, then starting. Any change in behavior?

Next step would be making sure your connections at the battery are good.

If it's a manual, can you bump start it?

As a test...bypass Starter relay R61 (Terminal 3 to 5).
The easy way to do that in a CAB is to temporarily move the jumper module you have in R21 to R61's slot and try starting.

If the car cranks and starts, it's either the clutch interlock switch or a bad R61. (Leaving R61 bypassed is the easy fix).
If it just cranks but doesn't start - suspicion points to the immobilizer.

The jumper module you should find in R21 slot looks like this:

My '96 993 doesn't have a clutch interlock switch or some previous owner removed it. Not needed and it is a point of failure.

jay@EZimmoblock.com 04-02-2024 02:35 PM

Yeah, it's a 97/98 thing. I bypassed mine - one less thing to worry about..

Thanks, Where do I find the bypass????
I will try it but I need to know where they are.

The interlock switch is attached to the clutch peddle in the footwell of the driver's side. One can unplug the switch and jump a wire across the pigtail plug or the wires leading to it and tie the wire out of the way.

Mitch - the pic below shows what you want to do in the fusebox. Your box may not look exactly like this one but In a 98 CAB you should see the jumper module shown in slot R21. Move it over and plug it into R61's slot. That's the starter relay you want to bypass for this test. (R21 powers the roof so will be temporarily disabled). Try starting the car and let us know what happens.

Just curious, since not much background details were provided... I presume the problem existed before you swapped batteries? Or did this start after the battery swap?

It just started with the battery swap.
