Default 17" rim/tyre question

On a set of original 996 Carrera "twist" rims...:
Front: 7Jx17 55mm offset with 205/50ZR17
Rear : 9Jx17 55mm offset with 255/40ZR17

...is it SAFE and recommendable to put 225 tires on these rims? [it's destined for a 928]. If I measure the rim width / tire width ratio, I get 0.79 - and according to one 928-website I saw (devek), the recommended range is 0.88 - 1.0.

Further I see from the Tirerack website they list 7.5" rim as required for 225.

So - anyone out there actually using these rims, or have experience with it? 225 on a 7" rim?? Safe? What's the advice?

Can't comment on a 928 application, but if you try a search (e.g., this thread) you'll find that many here upsized to 225s w/oem 7" Cup wheels to reduce understeer. My track tires are 225 MPSC & I've not had any problems. Before that I was using MXX3 in 225 for track w/o problems.

It'll be just fine!

VW uses a factory 17x7" rim with a 225 45 17 tire for many of their cars staring with the MKIV series of VWs.

...so a 7" rim with a 225 width tire is NO PROBLEM!!!
