Exclamation Tiptronic?? Who has it? Might need to get it.

Well, it's been quite some time since I've been on the board. My '95 993 was totalled about 6 months ago when I traded one of the partners in my Atlanta office my 993 for his 500SL for the weekend just for fun. He wrapped my then perfect and just broken in 993 around a light pole.

I have been without a P-Car and am thinking about consolidating vehicles. I only have 8 months left on my 2001 E39 5 Series that my fiancee' drives. She will not learn to drive a manual car. I've tried endless times and now we will be married August 3rd.. so the trade in on the fiancee' idea will have past!!

Anyway, I am thinking about selling the BMW and getting a 993 that she can drive and I can still have some fun in as well. 3 cars was a pain with parking, insurance, service, etc. I want to stick to just 2: A 993 with Tiptronic and my 2002 Toyota Taco Dble cab also an automatic.

Those of you that have the Tip option, how do you like it?? Will I be hugely disappointed going from the 6 speed to an auto? I have the StepTronic on the BMW (which I never use) and it works OK. Not very exciting. Are there modifications that can be done to the system? Do you feel like the 993 is still quick off the line and throws you back like my 999 6 speed did? Did they make a turbo 993 with tiptronic like the newer 996 has?

Sorry about all this. It's either a 993 Tip or a M3 with SMG. I hate to sound corney but I loved just looking at my black 993 sitting in the garage... what an awesome looking car! I lust for it again... I have dreams about it!! This would be a good compromise for me.

Anyone selling a 993 with Tip in black with turbo wheels?? I'm assuming all the other standard mods apply to a Tip equipped 993 as a manual?

OK that's plenty for now. I'm getting all excited just thinking about getting a 993 again!

Sean:
Cannot compare the non tip Porsche 993 but I would guess that it is faster off the line. There are about a dozen ways to drive the tip 993 and I love each one. I would also imagine that at speed they both drive the same. I would not want to work on the tip tranny, but the guys on this board spend some time with clutches, flywheels, ect... Mine now has 20K miles and no problems, is black with a cab, and has 2 sets of turbo wheels, one black of course. It is always for sale!

I would be happy to share my very postive experiences with the tiptronic transmission.....I've owned and driven Porsches since 1973....out of the last four, two have had the tiptronic; a 964 C2 and a 2000 996 C4 Millennium. The latter was sold for a variety of reasons, but most importantly, if I can only have one Porsche I wanted it to be " air cooled ".

Send me an email and we can arrange to talk, if you like.

Sean,

You'll be okay with a tip if you hate driving in traffic with a manual.

Otherwise I doubt you will be too happy with it. BUT you will learn to live with it.

Having said that. Im very happy with mine. Except on the very odd occasions when I go into the country.

Hi Tim

Oh my!! Well the M3 is OUT!! Craziness I went through every thread. Plus, my local BMW dealer sucks. I enjoyed my BMW dealer when I lived in Atlanta, but the local one here in Melbourne is the worst.

Thanks for that post. You helped push me back to the 993 with a Tip idea.

Out of curiosity has anyone just switched from a manny to tip on the same model and liked it better? For example switching from '95 993 manny to '95 993 tip. Woulda been nice if your fiancee could drive a stick. I couldn't see myself driving a tipped porsche- leave those for the big sedans. Hopefully my wife will let me get a second P-car(993 all the way-best looking). Regards. Mike

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my TIP.

I tend to like to shift myself while driving and like to drive a bit aggresively. I find the 4 gears on the 993 tip quite limiting. There's a noticeable lag between 1st and 2nd and when trying to corner aggresively you really need to be going very slowly to be able to drop down into 1st w/o redlining the engine. The end result is you sometimes lug around the corner in 2nd. With the 996 they have gone to a 5 gear tip.

On the other hand, around the SF Bay Area traffic can get pretty bad and I'd hate to be driving a manual in all this traffic since I use the car as a daily driver.

If you plan on this being a weekend car only (or mostly) I would say definitely go with the manual.

If this is going to be a daily driver and/or your wife will be driving it (and you can't get her to learn manual) then going with the TIP makes a lot of sense.

If you are set on the TIP I would recommend you drive both the 996 and 993 before deciding which is best for you.

<img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> Sean - I've had both a 98 Tip Cab and a 97 6-Speed. Most of how you feel about the vehicles is determined by how you use them and where. You can send me mail for more.

Alex

In the 2000 C4 Millennium, the transmission was a Tip S....it is much improved over the 964 C2 I had.

Even if in drive mode, you can down shift from the steering wheel up to two or three gears at any time....the computer will not accept a shift that will cause you to exceed the redline...really the best of both worlds.

Cheers

Hi Everyone,
I had a 96 tip I special ordered. In SoCal too much traffic to really enjoy the 6 speed so I figured the tip would work well. Car was great as a daily driver, but the gear spacing was all wrong for track events. First to second too great of spacing. IMHO the car needs a 5 speed tip to keep it in the torque band, which Porsche has done on the 996.
By comparison I have an SLK 32 amg with speed shift which is awsome for an automatic.
It seem that technology in the past 5-6years has has really improved with the automatic.

I rented (from Avis) a Tip 993 in Germany back in '97 and had a blast with it for a day. But there is no getting over the fact that it is an automatic transmission -- the lag during shifts is definitely there. I've owned a 6-speed 993 and that is the way to go.

Just get the 6-speed. When you think about it, how long can your wife keep you locked in the doghouse?!

Quick Reply: Tiptronic?? Who has it? Might need to get it.
