Make sure that you have this tool in your toolkit...
Hey 993 owners, you should make sure that you have the 12 point allen key in your toolkit. My alternator belt snapped at the track and out of 4 other 993 toolkits, none of us had it!
You don't need to buy a whole new toolkit, just get the single part. The new toolkit is an incredible rip off. I tried to use the wrenches and I could see them start to bend immediately after I put the slightest pressure on them.

Thanks for sharing the experience with us, that sounded even more fun than the moment I discovered I had stripped my alternator shaft.....
As far as I know the 12 point alternator tool is not part of the standard tool kit.

The tool is in there, becuase when I bought a new tool kit, it was there. However, the 4 993 toolkits at the track didn't have one between them!
There are two tools that look very similar. They are both look like large allen keys with a slotted screwdriver on the long end. Except that one of the keys has the 12 point tool on the short end.
I'm looking around for other places that sell the tool. I might start bringing spares to the track!

I have the allen tool with the flat tip on one end too in my tool bag, but no 12 point tool. I ordered it from the p-car dealer parts department. And I am pretty sure it doesn't come with the 993 tool kit.

WHAT 12-point Allen key??? Sure isn't in my tool kit (TT might be different than my '95 993), I don't se any blank spots in the bag, and reading the parts manual doesn't reveal anything that is a 12-point Allen (or Torx) key (at least obviously).
I wrote up what I used to adjust/replace fan/alternator belts on Robin's site (right, Boy Wonder - you did publish it?). Largely, a 8mm 6-point Allen wrench with a BIG "knuckle buster" to remove the outside 24mm nut - and a lot of cursing - worked for me.
For info, if you'd buy the shop manual, you'd find out the Porsche tool no. is 999 571 052 02. And if they're listing it separately, it is NOT in the tool bag - confirmed by checking the individual tool list of the tool bag as described in my parts microfiche.

Hmm... That's strange that you didn't see the 12 point allen tool in the microfiche..
I definately know that it was in the toolkit that I purchased for my 96 993. Maybe there was a difference between 95 vs. 96 toolkits?
The part number for the tool kit is 993-721-115-01 and that had the 12 point allen key in it.

That tool came in all the 964 toolkits but I have never had it in any of my 993 toolkits(3 so far) The 12 point is also very valuable in that it is the best tool I have found to remove the forwardmost top sparkplug on the passenger side of the 993. You must use it in concert with the sparkplug wrench that came in the 964 kit. Many times these are available form the Porsche salvage yards like Oklahoma foreign but you usually have to buy the full 964 toolkit(worth it). Hope that helps.

Would you mind explain the procedure on how to remove that spark plug with the 12 point tool?

Sure thing. The 964 toolkit sparplug socket has a sort of swivel attachment that the 12 point fits into. You use a 10 mm to remove the tin on the passenger side and then drop it down. You can then take the nice little swivel socket 12 pt combo and drop it down onto that top plug. It is almost the perfect length to fit over and aroung the various (arghhh) obstacles trying to prevent you from removing that plug. All you need is to breal it lose and then you can pull out the 12 pt and hand spin the plug out using the 964 socket swivel. I hope that helps. Much cursing was involved to learn the above procedure, cant give any directions on the correct words to use when using other tools....Have found this tool combo to result in the lowest 4 letter word count while changing that plug! LOL

Porsche has an alternator pulley update that will prevent the belt from coming off or brakin. It is also a good idea for the 993 NA engine,

Jeff, your part no. (993-721-115-01) is what is shown in microfiche for '95 cars (my parts manual microfiche is dated 1/96, so might have been superceded). There is nothing listed that sounds like this tool (have things called "intermediate piece for for emergency control, sliding roof", "crank", "Socket wrench", etc. - really descriptive! Don't see anything that could be this tool, but they might have changed kit contents (altho would have expected a part no. change).

Although my car has the "revised" pulley, I've just ordered the 12 point tool. I've been carrying extra belts and Ray's instructions for replacement. I'm glad you guys pointed out the need for the additional tool. Ray, thanks for the part number. The parts guy at the dealer tells me it lists for $18.79 and is just called a "wrench". Supposed to be able to get it in three or four days.
