Who built the motor?
Agro man and others, as I would expect, Kim is too much of a gentleman to single out the engine builder in a public forum. I am certain the engine will be torn down to the bone, and the cause of the failure identified. As you can imagine, there could be multiple causes for the failure, or combinations of causes for the catastrophic failure...I am no engineer so I won't speculate.
All I know is that Kim and his builder will get to the bottom of this soon, and we will see him back at the track before you know it. Good luck Kim...see you at the track!

Kim, Sorry to hear/see YZ's problem. I also laughed atthe 3.166666667 L. It nice to see that while likely deprerssed over the failure you can still find room for humor.

i was there the whole weekend as well, as bob stated, kim was always in good spirit and won't speculate on anything until facts are gathered. i hope it will all work out soon for our track leader.

I understand Kim's hesitation in jumping to conclusions about what caused the failure and not wanting to point any fingers...But if it wasn't driver error as Kim stated he didn't miss a shift; it had to have been a rod bolt or something that let go...I'd guess it was caused by a defective part.

Kim,
With no track events you are able to attend are you going to start working again and going into the office? Wait, I forgot that you got the Miata back. Whew, that was a close call.

Kim - any rusty parts you need for a rebuild - just let me know, OK? I have a garage full of them...
Waiting for your "Chapter 2" in this saga as you learn more....

You should also rename the YZ into "Lazarus"
Hopefully this time around it will be different

Kim, First of all I'm very sorry to hear of this. From all of your posts that I've read over the last year or so you've put alot of 'effort' into YZ. From the sounds of it you are pretty active in DE's. I admire that.
At this time I would like to bring up a question about DE's and the wear and tear that 993's go through while doing these events. I certainly don't want to offend you or anyone else as I know this has probably been upsetting to you to say the least.
What I'd like to know is (if it is at all possible that is) what is the expectation of the 993 in doing DE's and other track duty? I know it's known as one of the strongest most reliable cars out there but what kind of mileage can one expect, if one should expect any sort of reliable service at all with this activity? I know your car is not stock but I don't think it would out of place to say that your motor was built for reliability as well as performance? Your motor was built with genuine parts correct?
Once again I am sorry Kim

Randy,
My stock motor is going on the fourth season of club racing and DE duty. At least 200hours and about 7-10k track miles later and she is still running strong (knock on wood). I don't think my situation is unusual either. I have a friend with a 993 and the same set up and he has six seasons of racing and has had no engine related issues.
Pure speculation, but I would guess the issue with Kim's engine is more likely to be a defective part vs. a builder error.

Greg, Thanks for the response, it's impressive. It's experience like yours why people hold 993's in such high regard. There is a reason why they have held their value better than most and are the sweetheart of Porschephiles.

Yes, I agree with Greg on a standard motor and their longevity. Mine has 29K miles on it and I have been auto-x/tracking it since new. I am going in for my 30K service though and there is a oil leak on the left side and from observation it looks like value cover seals so hopefully nothing major (knock on wood!).
These motors out of the box take a good beating and keep right on going as long as you maintain them.

Reliability???
Although my car could blow up at the next track event (Let's hope not), I have found the 993 car to be very reliable. I have been tracking the car, about 6 events a year, for the past three years. The only thing I have replaced is brake pads, and, I am on my second set of rotors. I also replaced the wheel bearings...they were howling a bit and I just didn't want to take the chance of a failure, especially running tracks like California Speedway with 130 mph+ banked turns.
I change transmission oil about 2X per year, and engine oil every other event. I run on Chevron gas, add Techron every 3,000 miles, and have been known to add race gas to my 91 octane for track events.
In conclusion, and my wife observed the same thing, the car seems to run better after an event. It appears to be "happy" after its exercise, too wierd, but it is true in my experience.

Kim,
Wow, ugly pics to describe an ugly event. Glad it didn't let go while you were in turns 8/9, though...I shudder to think! Hope to see you again with the new and improved YZ (or maybe code named Phoenix). Good luck with sorting it out and hope that it works out to your satisfaction!
