1997 993 Cab paint
I am looking at buying a 1997 993 Cab , 29,000 miles, (Silver/Metropole blue) with aluminum package, motor sound, hifi, CD changer from a local Porsche dealer. They want $48K. All books and records are in order, it was a single owner car traded on a 2002 Cab. Original window sticker is with the car, $82K. The car is in good to excellent condition and the dealer has performed the 30K service. The only trouble is, just prior to closing the deal, the dealer disclosed the front end of the car had been painted for "stone chips". This includes front valence, hood, and both fenders. This raised my suspicion. I took the car to an independent Porsche specialist (who also sells used Porsches) for a PPI. He inspected the car for 1 hour, put it up on a lift, and did a careful inspection and road test. He found no structural damage and thought it was a clean car, and advised me to go for it. What do people think?

I would talk to the original owner if possible. Or consider a second inspection from another competent person/ shop. If checks out seems to be a pretty good price. I paid $ 62,500 in March 2000 for my 97 cab from a dealer in Chicago.
As they including a 1year warranty ???

I paid 61K for a 98 silver Cab with 4000m. Front
bumper was replaced supposedly for the same reason. When I looked at the car closely I noticed clearcoat overspray on the hood weatherstripping. Tim Deshler inspected the car here in Orange County and explained to me that it is next to impossible to match Artic Silver without having to blend in the adjacent panels. If there is no structural damage to the frame and the paint job is of high quality you may have a very good deal.

One of the criteria for the one year Porsche Certified Warranty is no prior accident/frame damage. There's a checklist the service manager has to sign. Ask about it.

Thanks Dr. Z and Beezr. I also noticed some overspray as you did.
Do you know if the 1 year powertrain warranty is the equivalent of the Porsche Certification? I suspect it is not.

That sounds like a really good deal -- I paid 2k more for my '97 cab with the same options (except I have 18" technology wheels, bit no motorsound) and roughly same mileage a few months ago, and I looked for a long time. The paint issue is a bit of a negative, but if it checks out per the other posts here, not all that big. You say good to excellent - anything else causing it to not be excellent?

Check out this dealer's site <a href="http://www.donrosenporsche.com/porsche_certification.htm" target="_blank">Don Rosen Porsche - Certification</a> for information on the Porsche Certified warranty... Here's the form they use, too... <a href="http://www.donrosenporsche.com/preowned/certification_form.htm" target="_blank">Porsche Certified Warranty Checklist</a>
Question point blank on the right side of the form says:
"Does this vehicle have signs of previous collision damage repairs?" If the answer is yes, it's not eligible. Ask the dealer if they will certify it.

I had the dealer do the Porsche Certification and they passed it, filled out the form completely. They say if I want the 1 year Porsche Warranty, it will cost me $1200 for 1 year. The car also just had a 30K service done. Is it worth it?

The warranty is absolutely worth it ... I bought a very nice certified 95 C4 with 38k miles, and it immediately developed a rear main seal leak that would've been thousands to repair at the dealer (engine comes out). Might as well do the clutch when it's apart -- they threw that in for free. I also had the misfortune of losing my third brake light, the dealer fix for that is to replace the rear glass; that alone would've been the $1200 the dealer wants for the warranty.
I'm surprised they didn't build that warranty into the cost of the car -- you might tell them you'll take the car today if they will throw in the warranty for free. But I would certainly go for it; think of it as cheap insurance and a reason to bring the car back in for all the little things that you will discover during the first year that could really mount up if you're not inclined to take care of them yourself. I had an AC vent that wouldn't close properly, a burned-out LED segment in the trip computer (new tach required), an oil cooler fan resistor that needed replacing ... There's at least another grand (tachs are expensive -- I could've lived with it, but, hey, it's under the warranty).

The dealer cost for the warranty is $600.00 and the internal cost for the labor is $200.00 or more.....Most dealers try to charge you a $1,000.00, but with the Porsche you are buying I certainly would not argue over $200.00 at this point.....stroke the check!!!!!!!...before someone steals it from under you!!!!!

I got them down to $47,500, and bought the car today at that price, with the understanding I can add the Porsche Warranty for $1200 if I decide to add it by Mon. (I hadn't seen the last 2 postings as yet). In addition to the 30K maintenance performed, brand new floormats, and the certification, they included a 1 year powertrain warranty with that price through a third party (not Porsche, but GE). I think I got a nice car at a good price. Does anyone know what exactly the Porsche Certified 1 year warranty includes in addition to the powertrain? I appreciate all the advice, thanks.

It's a little confusing, Mark ... you say they included certification and filled out the Porsche form, which should mean the car is Porsche certified, which means it carries the one-year Porsche warranty.
The dealers will often rationalize the premium they charge because it 's supposed to take a few hours of shop time to certify the car, but it sounds like they've already done that part.
In any case, enjoy the car, sounds like a peach.
