Post New Lightweight Anti Roll Bars

In the past, as some have been interested, I have posted pictures of rather complex pieces of engineering designed to reduce weight and improve performance. In a much simpler vein, attached are pictures of front and rear anti roll bars made from 4130 tube with machined 4130 ends. The combined weight savings over the Porsche originals is a total of approximately 9.75 pounds. Additionally, weight will be saved through the use of titanium bushing stops, titanium mounting brackets and titanium fasteners. Finally, the rear bar is a bit unique as it has the somewhat complex bends required for use with the Tiptronic and it is four-way adjustable rather than the three-way adjustable rear bar usually used on Type 964 and Type 993.

Will we ever be able to obtain the unobtainium? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

If such units were put into production in quantities of, e.g., 50, they might cost between $600 and $750 each. And while seemingly expensive, that cost includes the tube, aerospace quality bending of the tube, precision machining the ends, welding the ends, the titanium bushing stops (not pictured), heat tempering and powder coating.

Robert:

Now that is cool. The bars look pretty thick. At this time, do you know what steel equivalent thicknesses (diameter) the bars will be? Also, one nice feature of all OEM Porsche bars (stock, M030, RS) is a welded on washer that positively locates the bar laterally in the bushings. Other aftermarket bars that I have used employ bolt-together collars which seem to slide after some use which allows the bar to move across the car and "hammer" on the sub frame. How will you address that challenge?

Thanks for sharing,

Hank

And, and let me say that no club racer needs these, if you want the ultimate in anti roll bar related hardware, I might suggest true unobtainium, titanium drop links!

Hank:

These particular bars are the equivalent of 24 mm front and 21 mm rear solid bars. They could, of course, be made to almost any spec. As to the bushing stops, welding them onto the tube (as opposed to onto the factory solid bars) would create a potential weak spot and, as such, they will be made of titanium (or another metal to save a bit of cost) and mounted onto the bar by appropriate fasteners such that they will not move.
