Post URH - Unidentified Rubber Hoses

While changing the fuel filter today I noticed two hoses behind the airbox. Each of these hoses consist of two smaller ones which are connected together via metal rings. I don't know how it could happen but one of those hoses lost the connection...and as a result it has been reassembled.

<img src="http://www.sputniks.us/air/hose.jpg" alt=" - " />

I observed the area underneath that open hose...there were no signs of oils or other kind of fluids there. My guess is that they're supposed to transfer some air(?)... gases?.."to" or "from"?
A while ago I complained about kind-of-hot-oil smell in the cabin. Now i think the source of that smell was this open hose.
I didn't drive the car yet after I fixed the hose. So I don't know if that "smell" is gone Does anyone know the purpose of those rubber hoses?
Thanks!

Without digging into various documents I have, guess is that it's part of the dry sump oil tank ventilation. Gotta keep the tank at the same air pressure as the engine to ensure proper oil scavenging. To satisfy the greenie-weenies can't just vent it to atmosphere, so has to be a closed system with the engine.

It is exactly what I thought!
But my guess was mostly based on the smell.
It was really subtle..but I could feel it. And that is not the pretty one! I am glad it is gone now. At first I was going to change the fuel filter without removing the airbox. Later I decided to go ahead to free some more space to get to the fuel filter. And here we go! I've found that smelling snorkel! I feel good now. It is beautiful life! How little I need to be happy!

The insulation above the engine in the photo above is starting to droop, just like most 993's I've seen. Any suggestions on what to use to glue it back up more or less permanently?
