IMO if an unexpected $2,000 bill will cause financial hardship or excessively drydock the car, one should defer purchase until that wouldn't be the case. It's my belief that more & more 993s are purchased w/o consideration of the real operating costs, including proper maintenance & repair. They will then be back on the market w/needed work either done "on the cheap" or not at all. We're already reading some of the stories about those abused cars.

I have hit the 100,000 mile mark and I have had to do the transmission twice (I do shift a lot living in a very hilly, curvy country), replace my lifters recently, and had once had to have the engine taken apart and remounted due to oil leakage. Still, all in all, better than buying a new car (not that I'd want to... ), every once in a while.

I put a lot of time and money into my car. However, the thing that keeps me sane is that if I bought a 335i, which was the "normal" route, I would have a $10k car and lost $30k in depreciation. It's all about cash flow. If you can't take a $5-$8k hit at the mechanic, the I would advise against it.

I posted a thread recently with a spreadsheet showing all of my 993's maintenance expenses since new, for a lightly driven C2 Tip. (You could search for my username and find it). At 38K miles, the long term per-mile average is around $.22/mile for everything except gas. All the advice here is very correct - a well taken care of car can be easy to maintain - major work can be expensive so buy the right car.
