accuracy of outside temperature gauge
The outside temperature gauge that is part of the onboard computer on my '97 993 seems to read between 5 to 10 degrees hot and flucuate +/- 2 degrees depending on air circulation. Is this a common situation? Can it be recalibrated or made more accurate? Thanks. Bill Z

Bill,
I have not noticed any trouble with mine. The gauge does take a few minutes to settle in after starting the car. After that, it always seem to match the radio reports or bank signs to within 2-3 degrees.
I'm not really sure about recalibration. Sorry.

Bill,
Mine is constantly reading 5-15F hot as well. My previous 94 993 did the same thing and I always thought it was because the temp. sensor must be picking up hot air temperature from the engine.

Thanks for the responses. One accurate, one reading hot like mine. I too am suspicious the value is being affected by hot engine components, but if it reads accurate on other's cars, who knows. I may ask next time I take it to the dealer. Bill Z

In another post Mystery Wires Gert indicates that the temperature sensors are under the front bumper cover. A hot engine shouldn't have any effect.
Hot pavement probably will, though

Mine seems to be fairly accurate. Past experience with other cars is mixed: 97 Jetta GLX was 5-10 hot (dealer played dumb when I asked them to fix it), 93 Dodge Caravan was right on all the time, Current 99 Dodge Durango is right most of the time. Must be a way to calibrate, maybe someone with shop manuals can look it up...

Yes, Curtis thanks. I remember that post. I thought about my problem at that time and tentatively attributed it to the a/c condensor. I was loosely considering this an engine component to avoid being picky. Why the gauge should be accurate for some and not for others is a mystery. Bill Z
