Smile Squeak elimination tip

My 96 993 (45k miles) had become more & more of a squeak-bucket. Not the windshield squeak or rear window, though.

I had discovered that the door window frames (black perimeter) could flex laterally, and produce a squeak where the furry finish would rub on the paint of the roof.

Viken suggested a silicone spray on the black rubber seal that runs all the way around the perimeter of the door opening. I took that concept, and instead of silicone (I keep hearing about silicone + paint = bad), I waxed the paint wherever that seal touched it. This is the paint around the edge of the door.

IT WORKED GREAT!! I can't believe how much quieter my car is now.

Robert, "wet type" silicone is safe for the paint and will last much longer than wax. Also, the part of the rubber that touches the paint is quite minimal. I have done it and I am very pleased with the results.

Talking of squeaks. The squeak/creak that I posted on a few weeks ago has been cured ! I can turn down my CD now. Apparantly the cause was something to do with the handbrake? But as soon as the chap heard it he recognised it and when I got the car back the noise was gone.
Has anyone any idea what they could have been refering to as the cause of the sound?

3M makes one called "3M Silicone Lubricant Plus (Wet type)" is the exact name--part # 051135-08877.

Also, BMW sells a clear paste form of lubricant containing some silicone which is ideal for the window and door seals. It is called Gummipflege (Rubber care).

I think it is available at high-end hardware and automotive paint stores. Mine was given to me by a technician.

Robert and Viken,

I've been pleased with bi-annual application of "Wurth Rubber Care Gel Stick". The promotional blib specifically states "will not harm paint". Also, it's silicone-free. Truthfully, I don't know if that's important.

It's available from Larry Reynolds at www.carcareonline.com for $12.38.

Ditto. I've used this Wurth's product for years. It preserves rubber, keeps it from drying & cracking, and prevents rubber seals from freezing to doors in winter. The little bottle, which has a built in foam applicator making it easy & clean to use, is good for many applications. Good stuff.

Viken, O'Reilly is an auto parts operation that bought out Hi-Lo here in Houston a couple of years ago. They've got as many outlets here as AutoZone, for what that's worth. Pep-Boys only showed up in Houston in the last few years, and is probably a smaller presence here than Autozone/OReilly.

Not high-end, just mainstream stuff. Was pleasantly surprised to see they had the 3M stuff - although had to request some from their warehouse, I'll get it tomorrow.
