Exclamation Big Oil Leak Problem....Need Help.

I mentioned earlier I thought my PS was leaking because it was in the front, well today I was driving and I saw SMOKE coming out the back I pulled over and it looked like the oil was coming out from up top near the oil spout base. This is not good at all. I was enjoying the car so much and now I see a big problem.

It leaked enough oil to cover the bottom plate. I turned the car off and the checked the oil level and it was to the max on the oil stick. I turned it on and checked it ....same thing. If I am leaking this much oil wouldn't the stick read lower? I don't know, I am taking it to a Pcar mechanic and dropping it off. I wish I new what was going on prior to getting the HUGE bill I imagine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I doubt today will be a good day for help being the 4th. Have a good 4th anyway. Thanks

Sounds like it was overfilled with oil, and when the motor warmed up fully it was a gusher!

Agree w/Robert - you're overfilled with oil. When that happens the car can vomit oil all over. Easy fix, just suck out a quart or so from the filler using a suction pump, old baster, siphon tube, etc.

Make sure you know & follow the correct way to check oil level which is NOT with the engine off. It's engine idling fully warmed at operating temp on level gound as explained in the owner's manual & many Rennlist archived threads.

From personal experience on my '84, will agree with others. If oil tanks is overfilled cold, heat expansion will blow oil out all over right side of engine.

One reason to NOT fill tank to the max before hitting the track; heatup of engine will expand oil more than normal and blow it out onto the ground.

If you want to just get a litre or so of out out just use the center drain off the engine..if you unscrew it almost all the way out it will drip/leak oil out and you can take out a litre. This avoids all the pain with suction devices etc unless you are into those

Question

If it was over filled would it leak up towards the front too? I am positive I overfilled but it was leaking behind the passenger side front wheel. Is there a good way to get the oil overflow out of the engine compartment? I soaked what I could up with a shop towel, can I spray it with something and wash it out?

Sounds like it dripped and followed the oil cooler lines which run along the the passenger side, inside the rocker then up over the the front wheel to the oil cooler behind the headlight.
Sounds like it is dripping at the point where the lines go up and over.
If you were cleaning it up yourself, you should take the rocker panel off, (just a few screws), also take off the engine sound tray and clean it all up. You don't need the dealer. Use Gunk Engine Bright (or eq.) spray it on wash it off and go for a long ride to dry it out.

Heard anything back on your potential rack leak, GTR? As I recall, you found (possibly) red fluid dripping from the front of the car, inside the passenger side tire.

The PS rack had a slight leak in it nothing to really worry about. I plan on replacing it soon anyway. The oil leak like I said was an overflow problem.

Thanks for all the help.
