Best way to check oil level?
I know ..I know it sounds stupid. But the last time I thought it was low I over filled it and had oil shooting out all over. The dipstick is twisted in a spiral I am assuming this is the same on all 993's no Low level indicator or Full level indicator. So how do you really know the oil is very light and is hard to see sometimes.
Should the car run for awhile and check it after it's turned off or checked when it's running.

Just like it says in the book (or the gazillion prior threads)- engine running & FULLY warmed.
I Dremeled slight score marks on my dipstick to make it a bit easier to see the level - but then I've got these old eyes

FWIW
After you wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert for a reading, withdraw the dipstick and slowly move your finger, wrapped with a lint free cloth, down the length of the dipstick. When you start to absorb a significant amount of oil in the cloth, you've reached to oil level. If the oil is not too hot, you can even use you bare finger. Try to hold the dipstick in a horizontal position so as not to have the oil drain down the length of the dipstick while you check for oil.
