Post Feelin' like a newbie again...but have to ask...sounds like water?

Ok, I haven't searched archives because I'm not sure what to search.

Just for grins, as I was waiting for my wife at the supermarket, I went out to the Baby and started her up, just to listen for a few minutes to that purr without my wife making fun of me.

When I listened really closely, from sort of the back passenger side, a sound was distant but distinct that sounded like running/dripping water.

A) I KNOW there is no radiator on the car (not THAT much of a newbie).

B) I checked the oil...plenty

C) I'm assuming, since I add oil back there, that the reservoir is back there, so am I just hearing oil cycle back?

D) Do I look like an idiot for asking?

Help. Make me feel better so I can sleep tonight.

As usual, thanks for the help that I'm sure is forthcoming.

JPS,
Your oil cooler is in the front of the car. The sound was the oil "travlin"

That's oil gurgling. If you listen closely, you can hear it inside the car coming from around the passenger seat.

Yes, I have water sounds as well but more in the front passenger area than in the rear. Once the oil heats up in the engine and the thermostat opens for the front oil cooler I hear it.

That's the sound of adrenaline surging through your veins. It's the acoustics in the car that makes it sound like it's coming from somewhere else.

LOL w/Phil. But you have to cut a LITTLE slack...first time Porsche owner and all that. Other cars insulate you so far from anything going on that a noise like that would be a sign to abandon ship! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

This sound comes from the oil passing though the oil lines that are located under the passenger door sill. The oil is going to and from the oil cooler, which is located in front of the right front tire. This sound is completely normal, and is part of the personality of our 993’s.

That's why my wife tells me that my car sounds like an "Aquarium".

In addition to the regular comments like:

"Your stupid car rides like a small cheap plane........"

I've met many who have wondered what "all that noise was" in my car. Even worse, when I used to drive a friend's SC years ago, again, the non-initiated complained that this "thing" sure was loud.
There are those who just don't understand what all the "to do" is with 911s.... fortunately for us, we do

I like the part where I get a big cloud of blue smoke upon startup sometimes and it looks like I just fired up a 1982 ford galaxie with 400,000 miles on it. My turbo does it too.

I heard the "running water": sound for the first time this morning. I usually drive with the top down which may explain why I have not heard it before. Or, it may have just started. I never heard it before in my '97 993 or the turbo so I was concerned. I immediately went to Rennlist had found this posting and this one... https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ing-water.html.

It appears this is normal.... but, it gave me a start there for a moment. Thank you JPS for starting this thread 15 1/2 years ago. And, thanks Rennlist for a great search feature.
