It’s interesting the new Excellence “Market Update” says the following:

past 12 months

1997 - 1997 Carrera S

Average: $100,000. +53.8%
Good: $117,500 +45.9%
Excellent. $135,000. +42.1%

1996 - 1998 Carrera 4S

Average. $100,000 +53.8%
Good: $125,000 +56.3%
Excellent $150,000. +57.9%

I wonder where they get their info? I take it all with a grain of salt. We all have our favorites and most of us aren’t selling. Just passing along the info. Don’t shoot the messenger.

It's unvalueable Information for the 993 s, because the data obviously doesn't offer separated numbers for manual and automatic transmission. We all know the difference in value between the two.

I have been following the Excellence “Market Update” for years, especially on a few models I know well, and routinely find their valuation info to be WAY off, and almost always way low. For some prices they quote, I'd buy everything in sight.

I don't know why it's so off, but it is ALWAYS way off on 993s.

No short or longterm statistic is as fast and flexible as the Real market.

Agreed, but I think Excellence is much worse than that, as I have been watching the 993 market for over five years and they have NEVER been very close at any time in that recent past.

yeah this is far from the truth in the market as we all know … heck there are low mile 2S and 4S that have sold for over $200k but market is coming down a bit but not this much.

in my opinion it’s embarrassing to be an enthusiast magazine for one mark (Porsche) and to be so wrong about these values or to not even break apart manual vs automatic transmission models that any enthusiast knows makes a big difference on pricing. It’s clear they have no idea what they are doing and are out of touch with current enthusiasts and reality. I used to be a subscriber and didn’t find any of the articles insightful or remotely well written. It’s the reason why I dropped my subscription.

Do you mind commenting on 5 years ago, 3 years ago, 12 months ago and today's market prices for a "good condition / <100k miles / clean carfax" 993 C2S price according to your rough tracking? I'd be curious and don't understand the "+50%" over 12 months that Excellence is quoting

This will give you an idea of the trend over the last 5 years. The chart is sales price including buyers commission, where applicable, for MT C4S. Most of the data is from BaT and PCAR Market auctions. Not much difference from 2018 to 2019, but a big step up from 2019 to 2021 (50%?). Less so from 2021 to 2022. There aren't enough data points yet in 2023 to establish a trend but so far, prices look similar to 2022 (the Green dots).

Sure, I'll take a shot. Though 100k cars are often much more difficult to value because service history and records are important.

2018 I bought three 993s this year and one was a C4S with 122k and significant mods; the cost was ~$60k. I would think an unmodded C2S with 100k then might fetch $70k. (I passed on a gorgeous 25k C2S in 2017 for $100k; kicking myself now, of course.)
2020 This is a tricky year because of Covid. If it was in the first five-six months, probably around the same $70k. Later in the year add $10k-$30k.
2022 This was near peak, so I am thinking $85k - $120k max.

i don't think it's as much as 15%. it might be 10% plus or minus a couple percentage points.

Honestly, I never understood the hype for the 993 2s.
I don't believe that the 993 2s is any better than the 993 4s.

I'm totally aware of the technical and weight differences.

Agree- I PREFER the 4s because of the braking system, big reds, bigger sway bars- all the TT adds without the headaches of a turbo. I used to drive mine in the winter here as well and the 4s DOES perform well in light snow.

Never drove mine in the snow, but even a 4s can be tricky in wet rain conditions.
