Default Brake job

So I finally ordered the parts to replace my brakes in my C4S. My question to you all is whether I should spend the money on the brake damper plates. They come to almost $250 cdn and I have heard from a few people they are not required. Would like to hear from those of you that have run with or without them! I ordered the textar pads. Car is a street car not tracked!

Thank you in advance!

Derek

Track don't bother. Street, yes.

I used them on my brake job with new Textar pads and new rotors and my brakes still squeak a little.

Those spider looking things? Tossed all of mine. No problems no squeaks.

I use them in conjunction with very soft street pads to minimize brake squeal. , however, you have some options. Some folks reuse the old ones and cement them to the pad backing plate with a little squeal silencer compound.
Also, RockAuto.com sells them under the URO brand if you want to replace them with new for substantially less than OE. Verify the sizes you need from the Porsche 993 parts catalog and if URO offers them in the sizes you need. The size reference is the piston size. I was able to get the sizes I needed for my base Carrera in the URO brand. I seem to recall the best way to install the noise suppressor clips/spiders is to;
  • press them into the piston cups;
  • peal off the adhesive cover sheet on each one and then;
  • slip the pad into position
I seem to also remember that chamfering inside curved edge of the pad before installing it makes it easier to clear the caliper frame and not rub up against the exposed adhesive before fully seating the pad.

This is quite possible. I was at one time the product line manager for Bendix branded hydraulic brake wheel end products. A brake system engineer once explained to me that disk brakes are all inherently very noisy. Engineers design the disk/caliper/pad assembly so the oscillations creating the noise fall outside of human hearing. Whenever the disk, pad, noise clip is out of specification or simply dirty it influences this. I suspect the biggest influence is the friction material composition and temperature, I suspect in some cases and in some points in the life cycle of the pads & rotors the clips are unneeded however engineers like reliable solutions to engineering problems so adding the clips probably avoided a certain number of customer complaints during the new vehicle warranty period. Brake noise is at the top of the list of service complaints related to auto servicing. In my case my 993 is in Warranty any time my wife is in the car with me or driving it so I use the clips.
