I'm probably not understanding which seals need to be replaced but my indy did timing cover and lower valve cover gaskets w/o removing the engine. Still wasn't super cheap but the motor didn't come out of the car.

Thanks for all of the advice guys...super helpful. I'll need to stew on it for a while. I'm planning on keeping my 1982 SC so this would be a second P car. I've always loved the big butt of the S cars on the 993. Ideally I want the second car to be a great car for longer (1-3K mile) type road trips. The 993 is a bit of a sweet spot offering a "modern" ride with nice AC and the last of the air cooled cars as compared to the SC which has a very old school but super cool visceral driving experience. That being said, I could also spend 85K and get a really nice 991 GTS which wouldn't be a bad road trip car either. Some stuff for me to to think about.

That's similar to what I have done - I'm getting a 992 as my second Porsche. I feel like it complements the 993 -- it's a nice contrast and offers a driving experience that's very different, but still great.

I think a 991 GTS would be a great alternative to consider and way better for road trips than a 993, IMO.

This car sounds an awful lot like the c4s I have on BaT right now -- mine has a suspension done and HB sport seats and this one might -- *might* -- be in slightly better condition than mine. So, they should sell for close to the same. Even assuming this to be in slightly better condition, the HB seats adds 5-7k and the suspension cost a good 3k, so mine is possibly worth 5-10k more? I will say if the BaT auction ends at 77.5, I will feel I got all the money and maybe a few dollars more. In other words, there are better priced 993s out there. Do you love the car to the point that you're willing to pay above market for it?

Thanks. Another good data point. I definitely don't love the car enough to pay above market and I'm also in no hurry.

1. UNI chip solder will crack/shake itself loose at some point. Not a if but when.

2. Top end rebuilt by Porsche means the same OEM valve guides were put back in.

3. Paint work?

None of this is attractive enough for me to pay that kind of money for the car.

Going back to what someone said earlier. If it's the car that tugs at your heart (color, features, the intangibles...), don't sweat at paying a few more grand for it. So what if it's worth in the low $70ks and you end up paying high $70ks?
There a local-to-me radio car-talk-show host that says this: drop a coin onto the floor, and make yourself decide to-be-or-not-to-be before the coin hits the floor. You'll find your answer.
