Spinning starter...???
So, every once in awhile and happening more frequently, my starter makes a weird / concerning spinning noise, but the engine isn't turning over.
Sometimes it's I just have to try and restart, and another time it can take a few turn of the key before it engages properly.
I'm thinking a bad starter solenoid or weak battery.
Thoughts?

Replace the Bendix/Solenoid on your starter?

Agreed, bad solenoid. I tried to have a good regional electric motor shop (Arlington Armature) rebuild mine last winter but they weren't able to source a new Bendix.
See here for some starter options: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...d-it-with.html

I can let it sit for a week, and it doesn't do it on first crank with a weak battery.

Be aware of the copper sleeve in the trans housing, tip of starter sits in this sleeve holding the proper distance from the ring gear. if it is warn or missing, starter can act up. If putting in a new starter, make sure to remove/replace the copper sleeve with a new one. May come with the new starter if rebuilt by someone who knows.

Reviving this thread - I just had the same (?) - track day so the car was very hot, but sometimes the starter would just spin - you could hear it do it whzzz noise - sounded like it almost didnt engage - if i try again it would catch. Not just if its a clutch in the unit slipping? Was thinking missing flywheel tooth? but then it should work on retry. WIll keep an eye and prob pull the starter to see how old\dirty it is.

Burning Brakes
Starter in my case, with same symptoms. Replaced solenoid. Same problems a few months later. Replaced with the smaller lighter replacement, documented in other threads.
