late 80's, 964 or 993? Goods & bads?

I posted this to 911 forum, but I thought there might me experts on this topic here too, so here it is:

I heard (thank you jpc) that 964 cars are more trouble than earlier or later (than 964) cars. What are your opinions? Who has experience of late 80's 911 car or/and 964 & 993 cars? What are the good & bad qualities of those cars?
Thanks (advanced) for your help!

First question for you is what is your budget? Do you have a set budget of how much you want to spend?P-car.com

As Robin says, Budget is an issue but having owned all three generations would submit: torsion bar cars thru 89 were the least sophisticated with best road feed back, no power steering, harder to drive at the limit but more rewarding easier to work on and in many ways the most fun - in the meantime also the best bang for your buck. The 964 generation was the first step into modern auto technology with Power Steering and modern coil over suspension but less road feed back and inherently harder to work on. On the whole very reliable except for a the head seal and dual mass flywheel problems both of which are much exagerated. The newer 993 is supposed to be the best of the bunch - in some ways it is but in others too much praise is poured on it. The build quality is not as good as the 964 generation (the 996 is still far far worse). The 993's only real improvement over the 964 is the rear suspension which makes it a little quieter over bad road surfaces and somewhat more idiot proof in throttle lift cornering plus the hydraulic lash adjusters save some time on maintenance - but the jury is out on whether they perform as well as the manually adjusted ones. Finally, you may want to consider body style: the really traditional 911 -v- the slightly more modern 964 -v- the flattened headlight look of the 993. If you know your expectations all 3 can be fun just don't believe PCNA's advertising drivel.

Thanks guys!

My budger is about $25-34K, which would buy me a nice 964, but if I sell my current 911 (it's in Finland, but I love to take her out everey time I'm there!), then I could go for 993. But, if/when I move back to Finland (and take my car there with me), I really would like to see two 911's in my garage ;-)
