Mixed feelings about this new format

I like many of the bells and whistle features of the new board, but miss the bird's eye view format of the old board. In the past I just go to one page and can glance in matter of seconds and get a birds eye view of what's going on the board anytime during the day. Now I have to click on the particular post to see all the responses. I guess before I was relying a lot on the information that was given in the "subject" heading to decide if I want to view the post or not.

IMHO I find that "drilling/clicking" down on posts slows down the load time, and in turn does not provide a pleasurable experience.

Other than that, I very much enjoy the happy faces.

Just my opinion that's all. Either way I am not going anywhere else.

i really think if you give it some time, you'll start to like it.

the old board software blew. posts always showing up out of order, you had to look to see which posts were new. this way they're all in order and the icons tell you if a thread has new messies. or not. and the thread title stays the same. before people would make their response the title of the mess. and then type n/m or n/t (no text/no mess.) in the body. this way the thread has one title and maybe people will be a little more giving in their answers.

a LOT of web based discussion boards or going to this UBB software. it's pretty popular...

I agree with Robin.....with the other board one quick scan and u saw what was going on...here you need to spend more time.....

Well, I understand about not being able to see all the post subject lines across all the threads, but one you began reading a thread, you had to click each post separately.

Here, once you click a thread, *all* the postings are in a single page, which makes reading any given thread a lot faster.

And, hey, if we have a higher signal-to-noise ratio with keeping out the alias posting fools, I'm all for this new world.

That's a good point Robert. Now by clicking on one post you can see all the replies in one shot. Now here is another question, what if I wanted to reply to another particular person's reply post underneath the same post so that when others read it they know that it is a reply for that particular person's post?

Hi Robin...

Pick the post you want to Reply to and then across the top of that post - you'll see two quotation marks (Reply with Quote).. Include their post with YOUR reply so folks know what you are talking about.. OR - as on the old boards - just COPY & PASTE from your browser the section you want to reply to...

;)

I "know" there are ways to make the forum format be more appealing and John and I have chatted about that. I don't claim to know all the anwsers on UBB forums...but sometimes, less is bester. :) A more friendly font is one of the things we've talked about....yes, it counts.

If i ma not mistaken, the font being used right now is the Arial font?

Which I like very much.
Just my $0.02

Robin,

I dunno if you do this or not but select a response and right click to view the source code or whatever it takes you to see that... check the fonts that way. I think John may be looking into this. But, there is a def diff between what's seen as I type this and what the UBB settings send our way.

My thoughts on day 2:
-Much easier/faster to read threads.
-Postings stay in chronological order.
-Login should reduce flame baiting & anonymous & spurious postings.
-With all that's going on (graphics, animation, instant UBB codes), surprisingly user friendly.
-Editing great to correct typos, or too hastily posted thoughts.

Cons:
-Agree w/Robin - harder & much slower to get a feel for a thread. 1st posting topic may dissuade a look at responses that have off topic content of interest, previously revealed by the subject line.
-Font size a little hard to read on my smaller screen notebook (I do like Arial though) - although maybe it's just my old eyes.
-Slower to load than the old Board.
-Miss the "preview" ability.

On balance, I like the new & expect I'll like it more as I get used to it.

BTW, John D - shouldn't it be "Instant Gremlins" - so you can sell the "a" to Vanna.

Regards,

I see the topics in 'last modified' order.
I would like to see them in initial creation order, like I used to get in the old forum.
Is this configurable, and if so how do I change it ??
