Default Need Help!! - Porsche 964/996 C4 ABS Booster Pump Not Available

The C4’s use a different ABS Booster Pump than the C2’s. The P/N is P/N 993 355 953 01 (also 964 355 901 01 or 964 355 953 01) It looks like this
.

This part is NOT available ANYWHERE in the world. Porsche dealers in US, Canada and Europe have been out of stock for a long time and there is NO date for when a replacement will be available.

I have checked all the Recyclers in the US, they are also looking for this part.

If this pump fails you CANNOT drive the car, it takes too much foot pressure to stop the car.

If you own a C4 this will eventually affect you!

Please help me by emailing Porsche USA and ask them for a resolution. Their email address is customer.commitment@porsche.us

Please also join me and contact Porsche Club of America (PCA.org) and ask them for their help in pressuring Porsche to get us a replacement.

The replacement part will be EXPENSIVE (rumored to be $4,000), but better than a broken car

This is one of those items that preemptive strikes work well on. Not sure of exactly who, but there’s a post which shows you how to clean the gummed up pump, with a solution (mineral spirits, or rubbing alcohol I believe) soaking overnight. A RL search should locate the post. I have yet to do it, but consider it a need to be addressed.

All may not be lost; BBA can clean out and rebuild your ABS pump: http://www.bba-reman.com/us/index.aspx

If anyone has any feedback with BBA, please post it up! This would be good reference for others.

OP - Not sure if yourself but I recall reading about a shop in Hollywood CA about not to go their for a rebuild!

I used BBA for the race car. Thought they did good work and had no issues with the unit. IIRC, they have been discussed at length here and with good feedback.

Sent it to them, they sent back saying all OK. Tested it and did not pump.

this is about the BBA reman? The online reviews on them seems terrible

Are there any other rebuilders who has worked with this unit before to rebuild? I see it’s common in my 90s cars (merc jag ford Ferrari etc)

the most common failure mode for these is the green colored pressure switch - and these switches are available as a replacement part. Pricey but available.

this pump is for the hydraulic brake boost (in lieu of vacuum booster on C2 cars) system, a separate system to the ABS system.

yes this is the area where I have a few drops of brake fluid on top of my battery. If it was the switch that was failing, would it leak/seep fluid out from the switch? And would replacing the switch solve this?

thanks a lot

I believe there is a rubber o ring between the switch and the pump body. You could try and match up a replacement. Be sure it's made of rubber that can withstand brake fluid. (EPDM)
