Converting AWD to RWD - definitive parts list here - Updated

Since a few people have asked, I found the records from when I converted the 4S to RWD.
I'll PDF and post up the documents once I get access to a printer that PDF's.

Below is the parts list needed

You'll also need two ABS ring sensors P/N 99334111501, two bolts 90008212309 and 2 nuts 99908463409 (See Viper Bob process referenced below)

Below is a photo of these parts. What you can't see in the upper top corners are the toothed rings that keep the ABS sensors happy and the fasteners that hold them in place (these substitute for the front drive axles.

Below is the front page of a most helpful conversion process document created by Viper Bob.

The conversion process was straight-forward. If you can do a brake job, you can probably do this.

A few learnings?
  • I creatively trimmed some sheetmetal on the box to ensure good fitment between the box and the existing shift tower. Then since this was going to be put back to stock one day, I bolted the box in place and did not spot weld.
  • Dropping the front diff requires removing the shift column coupler. Reinstalling WAS NOT fun. I recommend you clearly mark the orientation before removal.
  • Don't be afraid to use a pry bar when separating the BBT big black tube from the transaxle or front diff, you'll need it since there is little clearance between the three.
  • I am not a fan of the SSK. It was high effort and notchy and there was too much shifter below the lower pivot point which then required dimpling or spacing of the BBT cover plate to eliminate interference. I would try and use stock shifter if possible??

Have fun. your car will lose about 120 pounds, gain some rear drive playfulness AND you have more tyre diameter options.

Mark DiPietro of FD MotorSports (formerly????) was a big help in sourcing parts.

Need this! Thx

what about putting fd golden rod and shifter at the same time?

Do you have to buy the awd or now the 2wd version?

the entire parts list for the shifting mechanism can be replaced by the CAE ultra shifter

If it's a permanent change you can also save some money by removing the outer axle hub and using that as the ABS rings, a bit heavier but free.

2WD version of both, great time to do them. The FD AWD transmission mount is a nice addition as well to help firm things up since you'll be RWD only without the center trans mount.

This is true but also requires taking a saw-zaw to your center console or removing it all together.
