Default The hunt for power. Supercharger? Turbo? 4L?

Hey guys, new 993 owner here and I'm finding compared to lots of other platforms, the wealth of knowledge in regards to serious power upgrades in a non-turbo Carrera is kind of vague and strewn about.

I'm looking for first hand experience hopefully with some different options as I plan on having a lot of fun building this car. Looking for north of 400WHP and good streetability.

So, with that being said, it seems the options are either pricey NA builds with sliders/ITB setups and increased displacement, the TPC supercharger option or some kind of custom turbo route.

I'm hoping this can just be a good friendly open discussion on how to get bigger numbers.

Thanks

If you want 400hp your probably better off buying a different car.

The best way to improve performance with the 993 is to improve the gearing, get a lightweight flywheel and reduce unsprung weight and reduce the overall weight of the car.

Good luck.

Might as well end the thread with this post ^^^^^ -- nailed it.
Regearing is the best bang for the buck otherwise buy a 993TT and call it a day.

Although I totally agree with all the advice you've already been given, if you have a spare $50K-$100K lying around, I'd go for a nice 4.0L engine. You should be close to your goal power-wise and without forced induction

I had a TPC supercharger put into my 1995 993 Tip because its a bit of a bastard design wise. I bet I get close to 400hp out of it. The belt alignment is a bear but other than that so far so good.

Thanks guys. And yeah, I know i can buy a different car. That's not the point. I have a 2017 M3 that makes well over 400whp with just a flash. Even my new G550 makes north of 400HP.

I want to have some fun with my 993. And on top of gearing, etc I'll be turning the dial up to 11. I know that choice is not for everyone, even more so in the porsche community where its a "buy it and drive it" mentality.

I've been looking at the TPC stuff and we're reaching out to them to see if they offer vendor accounts for shops.

Thanks!

thanks for the condescending comment.
it's just that many of us know that the 993 is typically NOT the best platform for "big" HP increases without spending multiples of $10k.
will be interesting to see where you are with your project 6 months from now.

Oh I didn't mean that to be condescending at all. I thought it was pretty factual that porsche purists are some of the most critical out there. And that's NOT a bad thing!

And I'll be interested to see where I'm at 6 months from now also. I'm in the middle of dealing with the planning department on opening a performance shop in the Atlanta area so who knows when my doors will be open and I'll have time to start on this.

My two cents is there's much more fun for the buck updating the suspension rather than adding HP. Additional HP is an elusive and expensive goal for a 993, though if you're driven to spend money, I suspect most supercharger owners are satisfied with the results. Light flywheel is a moderate priced upgrade, and gives the sensation of more grunt, if you're ok with the rattling noise.

Good luck. My TPC supercharger with intercooler has been trouble free and at least as gratifying as all the suspension and other mods over the years. Its now the perfect power to weight for a street car in my opinion. Stock was a bit underpowered and the modern stuff is so excess its a waste. If someone lives near you with one see if you can test drive. I am in minnesota if youre near.

You can get over 400 hp with a bolt-on turbo kit but the total cost will be $30k (but more if a shop does the work). Been there, done that, got the receipts to prove it. I highly recommend against it for many reasons. Back to stock now.

Yeah so far the TPC setup seems like the most cost effective, reliable way to get some more linear power.

And I own my own shop, and this will kind of be moreso a shop project so the only labor I'll pay into this will be payroll.

Doing 400 hp with a SC, you'll definitely want an intercooler, which adds immensely to the cost and complexity. And did anyone ever solve the fueling/programming issue? TPC used to sell it with an absurd 7th injector setup, which some guys scrapped and used custom chips from Protomotive, while others I think tried out different aftermarket ecu solutions. Not sure where that shook out.

So as you may see, there's no fully-developed-and-sorted way to add power since it's so uncommon (for damn good reasons).
