Default Open diff to LSD

Considering picking up a GKN lsd and rebuilding it with Guards parts. My car currently has an open diff and I’ve read that the install is much more complicated going from an open diff to an LSD. Why is this the case? Is it equally complicated going from open to Porsche rebuilt LSD as using an aftermarket LSD like Wavetrak, OS Gilken or Guards? Trying to understand what kind of can of worms I’m opening and if it’s worth it.

As far as what problem I’m trying to solve - my car is 100% street use. I find the rear end breaks loose easily on tight turns and just feels a bit unstable. Hoping an LSD will solve this.

Also, plan would be to install when the trans has to come out for something else so right now, I’d just be gathering parts in prep.

My Guard slid right in. Should be very straight forward if you are already dropping the transmission, my wrench was able to do the job without dropping the trans.

It doesn't matter what diff you choose, the install is the same. It is fiddly and requires some special tools and a bag full of shims, it is an interative process to get the backlash on the ring and pinion set.

If you do any work on the LSD that involves loosening the top fasteners and removing the pre-load on the clutch pack, be sure to install the axle stubs in both ends prior to re-torquing.
I found out the hard way you'll have to re-so it if all the cogs don't align with the axle stubs.

insert head slap here.

Maybe stickier tires is a less invasive option. If you are speaking of breaking loose under heavy throttle during low-speed street turns the best fix does not involve changes to the car.
Andy

LSD?? a synthetic crystalline compound, lysergic acid diethylamide, that is a potent hallucinogenic drug
