Default 993 and NSX..... best 90’s driving cars and perfect stablemates?

I just picked up an NA2 NSX and after a few hours of driving, my cheeks were sore from ear to ear. I’ve owned a rediculous amount of Porsche’s and while I’m still a Porsche fanatic, I didn’t realize that the NSX provided what I was looking for right out of the box with no modifications. The steering, ride quality, gear shifts, build quality and sense of specialness all wrapped up into a little Acura badged Honda. To get the same feeling with a 993, I’ve had to perform some major suspension modifications, such as replacing bushings, installing coil overs, sway bars and short shift kits.

What are your thoughts on the best cars of the 90’s and which one do you want next to your 993??

Twin turbo RX7 is up there with the 993 and NSX. Small and light and nimble.

The gen 1 NSX is such a thrill to drive. Its almost like you're driving a jet since you literally see no hood with the windshield ending around your shins and are so close to the ground! Congrats! Plus Ayrton Senna helped develop it, I think only bean counters developed the current gen NSX.

Congrats on the new addition!

I like the NSX but I’m shopping for an F355. Yeah, it is a basket case in maintenance compared to the NSX but it is IMO, a pretty special combo of sights, sounds and feel that is really unique. I am not much of a Ferrari guy in general but the F355 is the exception

Yep! And pininfarina help pen the original concept and Gordon Murray used it as a benchmark for the Mclaren F1 suspension.

The new NSX is such a disappointment.

My lightweight sports car collection has been curated to contain one car of each RWD configuration:

-Porsche 993 (rear engine, RWD)
-Lotus Exige (mid engine, RWD)
-Mazda Miata (front engine, RWD)

This gives me a wide range of driving dynamics from a small pool of cars. I used to have more cars, but I just didn't have the time to give each of them all the love they deserved. The Exige isn't from the 90's, though. If I were to replace it with a 90's vintage MR car, the NSX would be my choice, too.

Great post! Such a cool car. I’ve been considering NSX or F355 as a companion for the 993s but will probably end up with a 964 as I’m not as bold to make such a jump. Would love a R33/34 GTR but have to wait a few more years and deal with RHD.

Good choice! I asked this question a few years ago. I used my car as the comparison photo.

Never driven one. Sat in the driver’s seat in one at an Acura dealer in 1990 as a thirteen year old and the view out the windshield is one I’ll never forget. It really is incredible how immediate the road appears and how low you feel to the ground.

I actually flipped my wipers to rest on the passenger side of my 993 as an attempt to recreate that view. It’s not the same, but it’s close.

I could easily buy a NSX on a whim. My wife would kill me.

I've explored buying a F355 - although I would probably just kill myself to save my wife the trouble.

I think the 355 is the prettiest car ever made. The engine and sounds it makes are fantastic. I'm not willing to put up with the engine out service on that car. It's a deal breaker for me.

To my eye, the looks of the NSX haven't stood the test of time as well as the 993 or the F355. I'd still like to own one though.

Congrats on the NSX! Always wanted to try one but have not so far. As to your question, F355 gets my vote.

I probably should drive an NSX at some point too. At my age (41), the 90s sports cars are really special to me. If I had the $$$ and space, I'd probably have an NSX, Supra TT, RX7, 3000GT VR4, 300ZX in addition to the Europeans that I already own or are on my radar (993, F355, E36M3, Esprit, etc...)

Same here, wish I have kept my B5 S4. My first car out of college, had a blast with that one!
