Hi all,
My 1998 Porsche 993 has a leaking front shock. I am going to change all of them but I'm torn between which shocks to use. I dont track the car and I'm only aggressive once in a while. I drive the car with mt wife from point a to b and would like a nice ride.
So, which shocks and struts do I buy. Your help would be appreciated.
Mitch

An inexpensive height adjustable coil-over option I have had great daily driver results with for the last several years is the H&R Street Performance Coil-Over kit 29954-1 on hrsprings.com , both springs and matched struts for all four wheel-ends, cost about $2000 if you shop around, I got mine on e-Bay. This kit allows for setting the ride height from the USA specification down through the ROW range, -30mm on to a greatly lowered height where other suspension component geometry limits come into play. You can reuse the existing rear anti-sway bar down-links with this kit under normal height ranges. The only additional parts you will need for the job are 16 replacement M8 lock-nuts (900.380.005.09) for where the strut mounts attach to the body at the top. Lots of aspiring track guys buy kits with adjustable valving for a considerable premium over this kit, to each his own I say.

Most 9993 came w/ Monroes oe, They are a twin tube gas shock w/ digressive valving, designed for a compromise between comfort and performance
For a replacement you want a gas shock, I prefer monotube but you can argue either way and a digressive valve stack. Unfortunately most replacements w/ those characteristics are pretty pricey. and reasonably priced ones like the Bilstein b6 or 8(or their H7R equivalents) have linear stacks. An intriguing unknown is the Porsche branded bilstein gas shock, they sell these as replacements for 993 w/ stock springs and RoW ride height but I haven't been able to determine the valve stack parameters.
Bilstein PSS10 are a good alternative w/ a mono tube gas design and digressive valving, the desirability of adjustability is another of those debatable issues. They are nice in that they come as a complete kit w/ springs and mounts, just bolt them on and drive, then fiddle w/ settings as you wish.

Rennlist is awesome. I have basically the same question and love hearing about the possibilities. Keep them coming.

What is lifespan of OEM shock absorbers in miles or time or both? I have a 95 Cab with original Monroe and 65,600 miles.......ride is still good and firm enough when I toss it around...........
