Hello all.
I'm interested to know if there is a procedure to start the car after stopping and turning the car off. I went to the gas station the other day and the car would not start unless you locked the car and then unlocked the car. Is this normal? Is there a quick Fix if there is something wrong.
Thanks all,
Mitch

That's normal. A function (not so great) of the immobilizer. If you don't start the car within a certain (can't remember how long) amount of time, it re-arms. So you have to cycle it on & off before restarting.

If you stop the engine and pull out the key, it will not restart by the time you finish pumping gas. I’d just leave the key in the ignition (depending on the neighborhood you’re in).

Or, instead of locking and unlocking the door, just turn the key half way in the ignition, press the button on your key fob so the light alarm light on the door panel blinks 2x, then turn the key more to start the car.

The immobilizer is a great so your car won't be stolen but for the first summer i owned my 993 it drove me nuts first time it took me about five minutes to get the car started in a gas station nobody noticed which was great. Once you figure it out you get very quick with it starting.

Thanks everyone, I knew you would be able to walk me through this. This is my first 993 also and I was upset when it didn't start.
Thanks again everyone

Also, if you do not have another key fob handy, NEVER unlock the car, throw your key on the seat or put in the ignition, then get out and close the door to grab something from the house or chat with someone. It automatically locks and resets the alarm if it's not started within about a minute of unlocking.

Almost three years later I have trained myself on the system on my 96. I hate that about the car but it is what is. I have found myself leaving the car idle at times especially during cold weather when I stop for gas.

Just as an FYI - you can get an ECU flash to disable the immobilizer. I made this change a couple years ago and love the ease of no longer have to worry about this annoying lock/unlock sequence every time I leave the car.

Is ECU flash available for sale on line and how do you install it. Thank's before hand Tlaloc.

There are a number of vendors. I used FVD. Rennsport is also highly regarded. If you have a 95 or a 97-98, you have to pull the ECU and send to them for a flash. If you have a 96, you are out of luck unless you can procure a 97-98 ECU to use instead, as the 96 model is not flashable.
For the immobilizer bypass to work, you also need to place a jumper relay in the fuse box in the frunk (2 minute operation) and pull a warning light in the clock (15 minute operation). If you don’t feel comfortable pulling the clock, an indie can do it for you easily.

'95 uses an interchangeable chip as seen in earlier 911's, so no need to pull the ecu for a flash. Steve Wong is the go to for a new chip and he will tailor to suit user's needs. No pesky immobilizer on the '95 either.
