Squeal, what does it mean?
I have a very annoying loud squeal which comes from the rear of my car occasionally when I release the clutch in first gear. I cannot reproduce it at will, only rarely occurs although the interval is becoming more frequent now. I have tried the search but to no avail. I thought I remembered a recent thread but only could find sqeals and brakes. What does the squeal mean? BTW, the car is a 96 C4S with 16K miles.

Occurs as you release or engage the clutch, right? Short period squeak that you hear only as the clutch pedal moves? Thought might be the clutch slave cylinder.
Try this: after going for a drive, turn the car off. Then depress and release the clutch; see if you hear it then. If so, talk to a shop about a slave cylinder replacement.
Do a search for "slave cylinder" or "clutch"; see if posts match what you are experiencing.
