993 Tip Gas Mileage very low ....?
Hello everyone. I have a 98 Cab with Tip transmission. It has about 8K miles (low miles) with all services up to date. I am getting about 11-12 MPG on average (mix driving) for the last 10 years or so. The original sticker shows 17-24 MPG ! Would love to hear from other members as to the numbers they are getting and may be as to why the MPG is so low !?
Thank you.

Gas Consumption
Before someone says Drive It more often, LoL I have obtained 25 mpg on say 5 - 600 mile long highway runs. All City is another story completely. Guess is 12- 14 but could be 11 -12 but that is City consumption. Perhaps you can clarify if City driving only or Combined Highway City?
Our cars do need exercise (>: The car needs highway speeds after proper warmup. My car is a Coupe Stick or Manual. Think consumption depends on your right foot.
I probably get 22 - 23 highway.
Correct gas is also a factor. I would recommend No Ethanol. Shell V Power 91.
The best gas we get North is Shell 91. I prefer this gas and Only this gasoline.
I do run Injector Cleaner every couple of tank fills. In the north I use Lucas. Excellent Products.
A lot of folks here use Techron. See Link below.

Change the fuel filter regularly.
You mentioned services up to date, so assume the F Filter was changed, but how often? Perhaps try every 2 years?
Maybe add a fuel stabilizer? See how others react here. Brings to mind the question How Old is the Gas?
Could be A Factor. How often car is driven? How much fuel sits in the tank?
Tip driver may bring more light to this issue?

I will try the Injector Cleaner as you suggested. Reading the previous Rennlist posts on this issue, the Gas consumption (11 MPG) still seems pretty high on my car ! A few more details:
- Always used Shell 91 fuel
- Drive the car few times a week when I am in town and not dirve it for few months !!
- 70% City driving (with some stop-and-go-traffic)
- Drive leisurely (max 5000 RPM ). Average 4000 rpm.
- proper recommended maintenance
I don't know if the Tiptronic transmission (being 4-speed) with the torque converter may be a factor or not?

The MPG ratings were always inflated and folks never achieved them back then in the real world.
I would think if the engine is having a serious enough problem that would reflect in low mpg it would throw an OBD Code.
Maybe it is just not that low with a tip + torque converter and the added weight and air resistance of a Cabrio.
I add Techron to two consecutive tanks of gas once a year, who knows if it helps but it is easy and inexpensive to use.

I'd say I get about 19mpg. Mostly city.
I remember when I upgraded to a Wong chip that my mpg was better and response was better.
This upgrade pays for itself to some degree.

I do not know what is normal but averaging 4000 rpm seems on the high end of the bell curve and could explain why your MPG is lower than expected.

I drive my tip strictly in manual mode. Daily driver to and from work ~40 miles round trip. About 10 of those miles are highway, but traffic on the way back. Typically reach around 3,000 rpms before shifts. 142k miles on the car.
I'm currently at 21 mpg.

I just drove from Pittsburgh to Nashville and averaged 22 MPG (all highway)

I routinely get 15mpg in my 6sp because I like to keep revs above 3K for quick response. I have gotten 23mpg on the freeway at 65 in 6th but who wants to do that.
Get an Italian tune up, away from stop and go commute traffic and I guarantee you'll stop worrying.

There can be actual problems that cause poor fuel economy. The repair manual addresses it specifically. Air intake leaks (unmetered air) for example causes the ECU to dump in tons of fuel.
I’d go through the repair manual and get this sorted because something is wrong.
