AIR-COOLED 911 INTAKE REVAMP

Interesting article on Bisimoto’s air intake revamp

https://www.drivingline.com/articles...intake-revamp/

I feel like we don’t see many of these builds anymore. Would love to do one....if there was only a way to pass NYS inspections with a motec.

Also, side question - how does one decide the orientation (front or rear) of the air filter when using a GT3 plenum? Gunther Werks cars have the filter point back and others like Singer have it pointing forward. If this a purely cosmetic decision?

I've been running the electromotive setup for a year now on my 964, but now I have the aem infinity setup to install just waiting for the intake setup from rothsport. I'm running coil on plugs also.

“...with emphasis on the 5,500 to 7,300 rpm range.” The whole package, he says—and that dyno data would tend to agree—lends itself well to the top-end sort of numbers you care about all while preserving the low-end torque you know you need.“

Hmm. How many street drivers really want the 5500-7300rpm band emphasized? I’m curious if sticking with the 964 (or 993 varioram) plenum would move the power band into something more usable? The article forgets to mention that a 7,300rpm engine also need improved rods, likely gt3 oil pump (= splitting the case), heavier valve springs and lightweight keepers, etc. You’ve now turned $8,500+engine management, into $8,500+management+ full rebuild with upgraded internals. Otherwise you just spent $10k+ for a hp increase between 5500-6800rpm.

Mocked up a 997 GT3 manifold in my '73 with turbo. It's not yet welded together.

The ITB's are 911E, enlarged with 40mm plates.

Had to shorten the plenum because of course, it's too wide. Also there is too much plenum volume for my little 2.8. I could reduce the plenum volume by blocking off part of the internal volume.

The pipes to the intercoolers will run next to the firewall.

:corn: - interesting discussion. Hoping other contribute their experiences.

The dyno plot seems to suggest a 10-15% increase in torque across the band, which is good (but I'm skeptical). Is the cited $8,500 for the electronics alone, or the entire setup? Article isn't clear. IMHO, total cost would need to be $6k-$8k for this to get widely adopted. A year later and none of this stuff is on their website.

Looking forward to hearing more. Very interesting!

Agree, the dyno plot shows solid increases in the low range despite the ad copy. Though no way to know how much of that is from the engine management tuning alone.

I believe the $8500 does not include the required aim/motec + tuning. Add at least another $4k.

Must be $8500 including AEM with basic loom - I assume the price increases if you spec Mil-Spec loom or alternative ECU. Article is effectively describing the Rothsport Intake kit even down to the size of the TB and the Rothsport is lot cheaper (at least is was when I bought 2 years ago).

Edit to add - just looked at my invoices - Rothsport Kit with Bisi supplied AEM + Mil-Spec loom came in at just under $8K + shipping a couple of years back. Injectors not included. Ultimately ditched the AEM and went Motec and made 339Bhp on engine dyno with stock engine with custom headers + exhaust.
