New owner here!...pics and a question
I've obsessed about a wide body arena red 993 for what feels like forever. Finally, the day has come and I'm thrilled with it. As a background - I've owned a bunch of different cars, previously had a GT4 and, most recently, a 991.2 Turbo. Great cars, but something has always felt a little sanitized. I got the new car last night and I've been driving it all day. Wow. Talk about sensory overload. The car is practically alive. Not remotely as fast as my previous Porsches and yet I could not care less.
I do have a question. I've noticed slow speed maneuvering, like in a parking lot, the steering is quite heavy. Otherwise, it's on point when I'm driving and rock solid up to 80 miles, which is the fastest I've driven it today. I checked tire pressures and they are low, so I've fixed that. Power steering fluid level is normal. I don't have any experience with the C4S so wanted to make sure there is nothing totally off. There are no funny noises and the car drives great, so I'm inclined to leave things alone.
Thanks and look forward to learning alot about this car

Can you provide a little more feedback? Heavy as can't move the steering wheel with one hand or simply stiff unless you rotate it a little slower?
I have a C2 but even the 4 wheel driveline should not be too hard. Hydraulic steering assist can be a little slower and stiffer than an electric steering rack. Is your comparison to a newer car with the electric rack?

It's definitely heavier than my previous hydraulics. I can move with one hand, but it's takes a little muscle if I'm moving very slow at or near full lock.
Electric ones don't really compare - those are a little more video game like.

I have a '97 C2 narrow body and what your are describing of taking a little muscle to move the wheel does not seem right to me. There is no way in my car that the steering is that hard. Now I know the 4 wheel drive set-up in front is going to add weight to the steering, but I can't imagine it would alter the steering feel that much.

My C2 takes a bit of effort to move the sw at parking lot speeds. A ps fluid flush may be in order or do the turkey baster route with two liters of new fluid.
Love the color - no bias here.

Consider an alignment. My car had very heavy steering when I first purchased it until I got an alignment. First, have a shop set the road height within the factory range so an alignment to factory specification can be done. Anywhere from USA height to ROW Lowered heigh should be good to go, see attached. Be aware very few shops have the gauges to set the rear kinematic toe and some dealers who do are hit and miss on getting it right. Get a referral here on Rennlist for a local shop in your geography who has successfully aligned a 993. Once you are satisfied with the feel take a sharpi-pen and make some vertical strike marks on the front and rear struts and position reference marks on each of the adjustment bolts front and back. Do this so if the feel changes you can note if anything moved.

Thanks for the ideas. The power steering flush and alignment are good thoughts. That’s said I’m wondering if this is just normal behavior. Which is fine because the car is otherwise really go kart like, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it today. I’ll start by getting my local shop to check it out and see if I’m being a little paranoid.

I have a C2 and the steering doesn’t feel particularly heavy at slow speeds, but I also haven’t been driving any 911’s with electric steering. I think the fluid flush and alignment are good ideas.
Beautiful car! Good luck with it!

I had a 991 for a while and the steering is light as a feather at parking lot speeds, same as in all modern cars. The 993 I find very easy at those speeds, and wouldn't describe it at all as heavy, but it's not steer-with-your-pinky light. I think if you're used to that, the 993 feels heavy.

First off, congrats! Looks to be a really nice car.
I have a 993 C4S as well and I can attest that the heavy steering you describe may be normal, especially if you're coming from modern cars with electric rather than hydraulic steering racks. These cars ARE very sensitive to alignment, so that might be a good place to start, but I think it's just part of the analog air-cooled experience.
