Disadvantage of 964 Windshield in a 993?
 

I have read many threats on the topic of using a 964 windshield in a 993 and I know that the Cup cars came with 964 windshields. However I have one question that I can't seem to find any information on.

Are there any disadvantages to using a 964 windshield in 993?

Can't work as the apertures are a different size. The 964 had a bigger hole for the rubber surround and as said the 993 smaller as it's bonded. When 9M did my sunroof delete the factory sent the wrong roof (it had a 964 aperture). The scuttles are also different. It had a 993 part no, 993 scuttle, but a 964 hole. 3 month wait for the correct roof skin.
So unless you trim the metal back it won't fit.

Are You sure? Bet the frames are the same.

I was curious about this as well, as I wanted to try 964 rear glass in my car. I need to pull my rear screen to get after some corrosion starting in the corners.

Using the 964 screen has two big advantages, one being the ability to remove and install the glass myself, and the second being it doesn't have the stupid plastic trim that deteriorates rending the entire screen garbage.

Unfortunatley I was told it wont work.

The 964 windshield is attached to the seal with adhesive and then the seal is glued to the frame/aperature.

All the 993 widescreen part numbers begin with "993..." suggesting that they are model specific and the earlier ones won't work.

To be fair, a lot of updated parts will fit our cars in spite the part number prefix. For instance, the clutch fork I just bought is a 997 prefix, the disk a 996, working between a 964 flywheel and 993 gearbox.

The 964 screen may fit the 993 if it is fitted with the 964 rubber!

Yes, I agree, the dealer can tell you right away what is a valid supersession for most any part number.

Auto glass set in a gasket requires pretty tight tolerances on aperature size, you want it tight enough that the glass is secure but leaving enough room to actually get the glass in (via rope or similar).

If there were any differences in the dimensions of the aperature between 964 and 993, it wouldnt work. Sounds like this is the case for the front anyways.

The 993 had an extensive unibody redesign that resulted in a stiffer chassis. Part of that design was using the glass as a structural component of the body by having it glued into position. I would think trying to backdate the windshield to a rubber mounted one introduces two issues. One the body will lose some rigidity and may introduce road performance issues. Also, I am sure the testing of the integrity of the body for road use was done with the intended glass mounting method. problems with body welds, noise, glass or door fit issues may arise as things flex out of specification over time.
I would give back-dating the glass mount a no for these reasons.

The width of the window frame lip on a 993 is wider than the earlier cars(real life experience, I didn't read that on the internet). I have seen a lot more rust in window corners of early cars than 993s, not sure it would be worth the effort to back date your 993 to a noisy, potentially leaky seal.
