What did stock cats look like new?
I have begun (no backing out now) the sanding and tar removal of the stock catalytic converter on my '98 C2S..one more part for concourse if it is still around.
My question is if anyone knows how the part looked brand spanking new from the factory? I imagine even the "OE genuine Porsche replacement part might have changed like some gold galvanized bolts now only available in black, etc Do any first time owners remember, or does anyone have an image reference? The poster showing the underside of a yellow 993 with all access panels is not accurate. (Painted matte silver) Any insight would be appreciated. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...0d6aa5418f.jpg |

Probably not much different from what yours look like as they are most likely stainless steel with no attempt to address cosmetics. Maybe a little darker now than when new due to oxidation and contaminants baking onto them. I suspect beyond a light degreasing anything you may do to them will make them look less original. Then again I can't speak for a concourse judge as I have little experience with these sort of competitions. See if you can get a name of a judge from PCA and pose questions to him about how important the issue of how it looks.

Scotch-Brite disks on a rotary buffer do a very nice job of cleaning up stainless and leave a semi-bright finish.

After about 2 hours of scotch bright and rotary nylon brush. Was hoping for more of a mirror finish, but i clearly ran out of patience for that... |

A cotton buffing wheel, some rouge, many many hours, and quite a mess would get you closer to what Andreas has. my process was, scotch bright pads, followed by nylon brush wheel on electric drill. steel wool for the stubborn places. by the time it came for cotton buffing with polish, I was exhausted. |
