Engine Crate Size for shipping?
I'm having my 993 motor built soon and, due to the choice of builder, need to ship all the parts via LTL. My motor is currently in pieces down to the bare block. I plan to build a wooden crate to package everything up for the shipment, but would like to build it of a size that the engine builder can put the assembled engine back in the crate and ship it back to me. Can anyone give me the dimensions of a fully built 993 motor with exhaust and all accessories installed? LxWxH. I'll use this as the minimum size of the interior of the crate.
Thanks in advance Mike |
Coincidentally I have a fully dressed varioram motor on my bench (minus exhaust).
The engine tin measures about 35" at it's widest, and is about 27" deep The drivers side cam box sticks out about 3.5" past the tin, so total depth is around 31". Height from bottom of case to top of manifold is about 29". |
Pretty much a cubic yard box, sounds like. Inner dimensions of 3' x 3' x 3'.

Use a wood pallet so the engine can be picked-up with a forklift. Standard dimension is 48 X 40 inches.

Had a 993 engine shipped on a regular pallet. Motor was wrapped in plastic, IIRC. |
Thanks for all the reply's. Sounds like keep a crate the standard pallet size of 40X48 is the way to go.
