First time 993 buyer
Hi everyone, I am about to buy my first 993. Its a '96 4s with 33k miles. A porsche dealer in North Carolina is completing a PPI this week including a compression test.
This forum has been very helpful so far: Intercity with ship the car to NY, I recevied a quote from Hagerty to insure it - expensive so will call others - and I called Rennwerke already and will probably have it serviced there. Any advice on how best to handle the paperwork of the sale and to get it registered in NY would be welcome! Are there companies that you can pay to handle all that? |
The dealer in NC should provide you with the title or if you financed it the bill of sale and transfer slip. It's pretty straightforward.
See here- https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/transfer-ownership-and-acceptable-proofs-ownership#Cars |
Thank you - I am buying it from an individual, not a dealer though. Do we need to go to the DMV together?
|
Try Chubb for an insurance quote they are very competitive.

If you bought it with no lien then he signs the NC title transferring it to you, sends the title to you, and you take it to the DMV with your details and signature to register and title the car in NY. You'll pay NY state sales tax on the disclosed purchase price you give them.
If you have a lien it's a little more complicated as the lien holder will need the title- they'll provide you with a proof of ownership to get it registered. |
Actually, in NC the title and/or bill of sale has to be signed by the seller and buyer in front of a notary, and has to be signed and stamped by a notary. |
Yes quite right, good catch- it has to be signed in front of notary by seller with buyers name added. However the buyer can sign in NY once he gets it.
From NY DMV link I posted earlier: To transfer ownership

Thank you - very helpful. A little daunted by the process - I have not been able to find a good post yet on how best to sequence the different steps (bill of sale, transfer, etc) and how best (and at what stage) to handle payment.

Have you checked the expertise of the dealer doing your PPI? Do they have a reputation for knowing anything about air-cooled variants?
|
Very helpful - thank you! What other paperwork should I ask from the seller? I downloaded a bill of sale document from the DMV website - looks like I need that to register the car in NY. Is there anything else?
Its the Porsche dealer in Durham who is doing the PPI including compression - sounds like they knew these cars well. |

Good luck and enjoy your new ride! |
Get a quote from Heacock for agreed value insurance. In 17 years owning the 993 I’ve been through their competitors like Leland West and Haggerty and Heacock is the best. Real people to talk to and they will give you good service and the agreed value amount your new car requires. Congratulations on the purchase - where in NYS are you? Syracuse area here. |

This could be an epic road trip. I would fly to Durham with a certified check and a new NY plate and drive her home AFTER a detour to Tsil of the Dragon. |
Congrats on the new car - I agree with Foxman....that would be an awesome road trip. Please let us know if you have any questions; I'm attaching a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the 993 platform.
