I had a bug many decades ago in high school- and recently bought a '67 sunroof, not "Singer" quality mods, but I'm doing conservative upgrades- alloy wheels, vintage momo steering wheel, put gauges in dash, etc.

Now, that is so cool. When I meet my wife we both had 1970 bugs. My first one was a 1967. Later I had a 1958 and another 1970. In 1963 my folks drove my brother and I from Los Angeles to Atlanta Georgia and back in a 1962 VW Bug. No air conditioning, mid summer in the deep south and both parents smoked!

The 1967 is a special year. Last year of the old style bumpers, first year of 12 volt system, last year of low back front seats and non-padded dash, first year of hooded headlights and the only VW bug to have a specific exterior door handle.

I actually found this old pic from probably 1973 (45 years ago!), taken by a good friend who is still a good friend. I googled, and the location (50 miles away) is still the same, so this spring we're gonna try and recreate the photo with the now-old me and my new '67 bug that looks a lot like my old '61!

The Memminger reminds me of the kits I would see in the 70's era Sears Automotive circulars for modifying a Beetle.
I remember seeing a Rolls style hood, rumble seat look rear with back mounted tire, etc. etc.

Hmmmm, real exhaust pipes, a real gauge, a real shifter not a Braun miniature shaver... seems that Porsche designers could learn a thing or two from this company for the 992.2...

The Australian has made an amazing work with it. You can't compare him with the above ugly bug!

By the way, I always wanted a split window beetle!

I lusted after this amazing Porsche-powered split-window bug, but thankfully it sold before I could decide how crazy I was.

Needs some contrasting black accents on it...especially on the raised portions of the hood. Would emulate a pretty great handlebar mustache.

@centerpunch Paul - That is quite a build! Is there much of a market for such a creation?

The owner was also selling a 67 through that site- that's the one I ended up buying. I talked to Randy at the oldbug site, saying maybe if I got crazier I'd call him back and try to buy the '53 in a month or so, and he told me it had already sold a day or two after it was listed!
