The replacement shift knob/boots Porsche is selling are garbage

I saw that too when I went back and looked, but c'mon, that is a lawyerly point. Porsche is selling this under the same part number as the leather original. It's fine to change the material and make the item less durable and less attractive. But not disclosing that, and letting the customer believe they're getting the original item, is misleading. I would think Porsche could treat its air-cooled customers a little better than that.

I just went with this set up. Shift tray is from www.swineeleven.com (photo taken prior to cleaning up the rubber shift boot).

I'm 100% sure that they are made of leather but another quality than 20-25 years ago! Show us a picture of the back side of the leather, if it's not real it will be easy to spot from the inside!
Modern car leather is not what it used to be!

^looks nice, the new "RS" lightweight version. They should probably charge extra for the light weight materials.

I would wager a small amount of money that the new ****/boot is vinyl, not leather. It really does not look or feel like leather. I could be wrong but I doubt it. It matters because vinyl is less durable than leather, and the shift **** gets touched (i.e. worn) every time you shift gears.

So in that aspect it is vinyl but it is backed with leather and called leather!

It would be very easy to confirm if it’s leather or not by the texture of the underside. Vinyl typically has a cloth like appearance underneath, leather looks like a suede underneath. Post up a pic of the underside so we can see and it will help.

Modern post 993 car leather is painted with thick vinyl paint so it is actually leather on the back side and vinyl on the outside! It is more or less useless to treat modern car leather vid care products simply because the vinyl will not soak in anything, unlike the leather in our 993s that soaks in the care products.
So in that aspect it is vinyl but it is backed with leather and called leather!

That's what I did and it's leather at least on mine!

20+ years ago, the independent boutique car maker Porsche often used the best materials available.
In 2018, VW, who owns Porsche now, always uses the cheapest possible products they can possibly get away with.
There's a reason people still pay outrageous amounts of money for these old used cars, and this is one of the main reasons. They were mostly built to a standard, not a price point
