Clutch for RS flywheel / LWF
Hi guys,
I have an original 964 RS flywheel which I want to install in my 993 C2. Since I believe the car is still on it's first clutch (100k miles) I want to replace it as well.
Is it neccessary to buy the RS clutch or does the normal 964/993 clutch work as well? The only difference I can see is that the RS clutch hast torsion springs. I'm asking because the RS clutch kit is almost twice the price of the already expensive standard clutch kit.
thanks,
Andreas

Don't know the answer but the RS throw-out bearing has longer 'ears' to make up for distance lost when you eliminate the very thick dual mass flywheel.
So, maybe RS FW + standard PP + RS TOB works.

The regular 993 pressure plate is fine and actually has a higher clamping force than the 964RS pressure plate but you really need some sort of spring dampening on the disc.

You do need the RS clutch I'm afraid to absorb the torsional vibrations as that is part of the funtion of the DMF and the 964 has a vibration damper on the front pulley. Make sure you mount it the right way round, other parts will also be needed. You won't regret fitting the LWF makes the gearbox a bit noisy but it will accelerate like a scalded cat

As already mentioned, stock 993 pressure plate is fine but you need a spring damped disk from a 996/997 GT3. I'm running this combo with an Andial midweight flywheel and it's perfect.

I thought it was engine pinging, especially at low revs in first gear. Drove me nuts until i finally figured it out. Went as far as pulling the fan so i could check that the knock sensor was torqued down properly. Now i just spend as little time as possible at lower revs in low gears... and the LWF helps with accelerating briskly.

Thanks for the info! So just to be clear - this is the complete parts list necessary for switching DMF -> LWF on a 993 C2:
Clutch Disc: 964 116 011 30 or 996 116 015 32 (any benefits of one over the other?)
Pressure Plate: 964 116 028 03
Release Bearing: 944 116 080 01
Guide Tube: 950 116 813 30
9 x Clutch bolt: 90006710301
Pilot bearing: 931 102 111 00

Again per Gert, if the RS flywheel you have doesn’t include the ring gear and bolts you need those too, i don’t have those part numbers listed for my build because they came with the lightly used one I bought. And of course replace the rear main seal while you’re in there, 999-113-426-41.

I used the 764 PP, and the 997GT3 4.0 disc. I have little to none of the associated “character” audio aura, that others frown upon. I wouldn’t want a car that didn’t have this clutch. :-)

One thing to relearn when driving with the RS clutch and LWF is how quickly the revs drop as well as how quickly the revs rise. You need to leave it in a gear when slowing to a stop and not just shift to neutral at say 2k or 2500. Sometimes the idle control valve given its relatively older technology cannot compensate. Stalling is embarrassing but relearning and practicing more rev matching during downshifts is more fun and engaging.
