Sadly not the correct oil for a 993, should be running 20w-50 or 15w-40 for colder climates. Great deal if you have a car that does take 5w-40.

This has all the looks of becoming another lengthy oil thread. Buckle in for the ride!

Sorry, didn't mean to start an argument. Thought 5W-40 was more for water-coolers but I could certainly be wrong.

Page # 90 in the 993 Owner's Manual tabulates correct, recommended engine oil viscosity by usual ambient temperatures in which operated.
15-40 for most everything,
5-10 lower parameters if operated at <14-degrees F.

You are correct: the 5w-40 oils are best suited for the water-cooled cars unless operated in near arctic conditions.

You're right.
I should have included a use case disclaimer..........................

I bought a case for our 69 Barracuda.
No worries about a catalytic converter with this application.

Every few years the same people on this forum keep changing their reasons for scaring owners into not using product ABC. The worst post I've witnessed was telling somebody to immediately drain their oil after it had just been changed. (I would still love to see those bearing clearances posted...) Truth is, there is not a single person (that regularly posts on this forum) that can tell you what is too thin. However we do have almost 30 years of usage data now! So we might be able to look at what the factory has been using to fill the 3.6L during production and later at regular service intervals when you bring your 993 to Zentrum Stuttgart; Shell TMO 10w30 -=> Shell TMO 5w40 -=> Mobil 1 5w40 -=> Mobil 1 0w40 -=> 10w60???, and their cST@100C & HTHS@150C values to see what might be considered a bare minimum?

I'm pretty indifferent to what oil people use as it has no real effect on me. Only thing I can really say is I would follow what ever Steve Weiner says. Among people on this forum, he probably has the most experience with these engines.
