Default Porsche reduces price of NEW flat 6 engines

Porsche has reduced the the short engine price of a NEW M96-generation flat six to only 3,500 GBP, a reduction of 50%.

That's quite a deal for an engine making 320hp in stock form with no mods and it got me thinking. Is it possible and has anyone put a water cooled M96 in a 993?

If you're gonna destroy the value of a 993 by replacing it's original engine, I'd think a new small block American V8 would have more power and be even less money.

Destroy the value? A V8 would. A well sorted 993 with M96 might be different. Anyway, this isn't about resale value, was interested to know if anyone has done it.

Pretty sure a 993 with it's engine replaced with a new M96 would take a huge hit in value. Also, why? Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a water pumper 911?

I'll leave it to all those who've done this swap to chime in though.....

Nobody's done this swap because it's basically impossible. Where are you going to put the radiators? What about all the additional electronics? How do you adapt the exhaust? Gearbox? Axles?

Cars aren't Legos. With very rare exceptions they are not modular.

It's totally possible. The 993 was originally designed with water cooling in mind but it became clear Porsche didn't have funds to finish development at the time so evolved on the 964 instead- waiting for 996 to bring out a new direction. Source- Panorama / Rennlist

There have been race car conversions already, I was really asking if anyone had done it in a road car .

The m96 is a piece of **** of the highest order. why anyone would replace the rock solid 993 engine with an m96 I have no idea. it is junk top to bottom, fron to back and side to side. perfect example of how cost cutting can ruin a product.

Yes totally rock solid with no examples leaking oil from gaskets and zero issues with the tiny SAI passages they drilled in the heads

M96 was lambasted for the IMS issues which are fixed now or at least a fix is available. Plenty of them over 100k miles.

I was asking theoretically - you know, spit balling. Maybe I'll put a post in the 996 forum where they are less likely to choke on their own sense of outrage.

That's a very good idea. You're gonna get nothing but grief on here. The word "blasphemy" comes to mind...but I would never say that about what someone wants to do with their own car. I do wish you luck which ever route you decide to go.

Wow! It's amazing to me how much s##t this is getting. The op just asked a simple question - has anyone done the swap? He didn't say he was doing it, or even say it was a better engine.

Multiple replies & no answer. (Including mine - I don't know).

Thank you. I really just wanted to talk about- I found it interesting- I'm a gear head like we all are. Not contemplating it for my own car.

This is very common on internet forums. I actually find it quite irritating...unless of course it's me doing it.

Don't take it personally from the group. I'm sure you understand that suggesting swapping a 911 air-cooled engine out for a 911 water cooled engine is about as bad as it gets on an air-cooled forum...there will definitely be 'kickback'. But it's all good!

It is obvious your knowledge of these motors are limited. Suggest you do a bit of research. Porsche did not put these NA M96 motors in 997 GT3 and turbos for a reason. This Mezger block architecture was kept in cup cars only until a few years back.
