Shipping Air Bag Steering Wheel?
#2
Burning Brakes
I bought one off a guy a few years ago. The shipment got to the fedex transit point and somehow they realized what was being shipped. They would not deliver it to me and would not send it back to the seller. Not sure what happened in the end.

I have bought and sold a number of steering wheels with air bags and at times, just the air bags. I package them well (lots of bubble wrap) and ship them as an auto part. I have never had an issue. I also have never heard of an air bag deploying during shipment.

When I first bought my car a fellow Rennlister sold me his 4 spoke 993 steering wheel with an airbag. He sent USPS mail... From my understanding you can't ship an airbag via air and must go via ground as they are explosive. Perhaps FedEx ground or UPS ground as alternatives?

Sounds like the OP is giving his shipper too much information and causing problems. By the book, the airbag is a blasting cap surrounded by a bag of fertilizer. These items should probably be shipped as ORMD hazardous items, ground shipping only.

ORM-D is a marking for mail or shipping in the United States that identifies other regulated materials for domestic transport only. Packages bearing this mark contain hazardous material in a limited quantity that presents a limited hazard during transportation, due to its form, quantity, and packaging.

You guys are divulging too much info. Box up your item, take to shipper, and say “automotive parts”, that’s it. If they want more info, “steering assembly”. I am 200% sure, the airbags were shipped once before. It’s just like an oil analysis. If you tell post office you’re mailing motor oil, they’re gonna scramble into a hazmat drill.

The major parcel services all have special licenses to ship explosives( that's what an air bag is) and in my experience will only knowingly accept them from licensed and insured sources. I bought an a/b and it was shipped by either FedEX or UPS, can't remember which from Oregon. I believe that it came vis ground shipping. The package was clearly labeled as to contents and dangers associated w/ it.
When I sold an a/b w/ wheel i insisted on handing it to the purchaser. At the time I inquired no one would accept it from me for shipping.
As to shipping w/o full disclosure, sure you can do it and probably get away w/ it but you are opening yourself up to a world of liability and litigation and possible criminal charges should something go wrong. I suppose it's a question of risk vs reward. How much do you have to lose if something happens?

I will be checking with my local UPS office on Monday. I have read: https://www.ups.com/us/en/help-cente...und-orm-d.page
They may just ship it...I will not ship it illegally and face a potential beef with the Feds. Not worth it for $500, and recall the Feds nearly always win their cases..they have unlimited resources, me finite.

I have had more than 20 ell-packaged airbags shipped to me and have shipped out with UPS and FedEx as auto parts. Always packaged well. I have been told that without a current an airbag would not deploy. Haven't checked the veracity though.
