Your maintenance items and upgrades when engine is down
Hey guys, I'm wondering if there's a list of wear items that can be opportunistically replaced when the engine is down. I'm installing a LWF and replacing the clutch, and will take care of leaking timing chain cover gaskets.
What kind of repairs and upgrades do you recommend or you're delaying until you drop the engine?

Be aware unlike earlier 911 series the 993 engine doesn't need to be removed to service the transmission or replace the clutch so you will need to decide if engine out is worth the added labor cost.
In any event engine out or not when the transmission is out for a clutch replacement the power steering belt is an easier job.
If you decide to remove the engine then:

If you decide to remove the engine then:
- If your plugs and wires are old replace them;
- Inspect the wires going to the air pump if they are dried out and cracking replace the wires only no need to replace the pump;
- If your car has over 60K and has never had the hydraulic lifter cartridges replaced this will likely come up in the next 20 to 30K miles and may be worth doing now although not really necessary and somewhat expensive;
- Check all the vacuum fittings, solenoids, and actuators. If your actuators are original you may want to consider replacing them, however, engine out does not make the job any easier.
- If your fuel filter is original and you have over 60-80K it is easily replaced now.
- The engine lid shocks are easy with no engine in the body.

good list - I would consider rebuilding the distributors as well - new bearings and belt. of course there are the valve cover gaskets, V belts, SAI valve. it sure is a slippery slope!!!! good luck with all you do!!

I purchased the parts to do this so next time I'm in the area under the car it can be added.
One of the small parts had to be purchased on eBay from a guy in the UK as I could not find the part here in the US.

I did an engine out service a year ago. If you search, people gave me a ton of great insight as to what to do while I was in there.

I asked the same question recently. Have a search for my name and you should find it.
In short, consider:
- ignition parts (plugs, wires, dist caps + rotors)
- motor mounts
- valve cover and timing chain cover gaskets (if needed)
- power steering belt
- clutch slave cylinder and flex line
Then your shop may find other worn bits and pieces once working closely in there.
