Default Top 5 reasons not to buy an out-of-state car (at least in California)

5). You can see the car with your own eyes before buying.
4). The DMV VIN verification process.
3). Seller is responsible for smog, meaning you don’t have to worry about the drive cycle.
2). See #3 & 4

Car is finally registered, after spending what felt like a lifetime at DMV this morning. And the plate is 8DAD and the three digits that make my daughter's birthday. Almost worth the wait. Almost. Ok, not even close to worth it.

As a CA resident, I wish we could just do away with testing for all ODBI cars, and/or have legislation which allows us to buy a smog exemption subscription (like buying carbon credits). Pay a fee, skip smog test. It'd put money into state coffers instead of cheating smog shop hands, reduce the costs of enforcing the smog testing, and allow the aftermarket to flourish in CA (which would bring in more tax revenue).

25 year rolling exemption rule would be amazing, but clearly a pipe dream for CA.

I bought an out of state car last year and had no issues with smog.
Did a rennlist search and Newport smog does it all. If in SoCal it’s the way to go. Spent a couple of hours on a Saturday and had license plates on the car. Piece of cake.
I do agree with the comment about getting out of ca. I’ve only been here 3 years and can’t get out soon enough.

Congratulations! Regarding the DMV - Fell St or Daly City? Every time I pick up a car I do the one in DC - half the wait compared to Fell. I live super close to you —I bought the stainless brake lines from you back in 2014 right after you sold your first white c4s. :-)

BTW - where do you do the drive cycle? It is tought to find enough uninterrupted road. I use to use Sloat but now its getting more congested. Someone else suggested doing an endless loop on the road to twin peaks.

The 993 lives down the peninsula and I did the drive cycle down there--much easier, plenty of appropriate roads in the Woodside/Portola Valley area. But ultimately, I needed a shop to complete it as I only had a cheapo OBD 2 reader (cost of having the shop do it was less than buying the necessary computer/software).

I went to DC DMV, it is much easier. I had an appointment at 8:20 in the morning, arrived at 7:50 and there were about 40 people in the appointment line already and twice as many in the non-appointment line.

Hope those brake lines works out for you. Looking for a new set for the new C4S......

I'm moving to the Bay Area soon and bring my ODB1 95 with me. Here's hoping there are no issues!
