Default U-Haul

I'm permanently moving from TX to FL and, due to various reasons (wife to wrangle our 5 and 7yo boys, tools, workout gear, too much crap, etc), I need to rent a U-Haul trailer to tow my 96C2 the 900+ miles. Has anyone rented one of their transport trailers? Recommendations? Due to my ride height being ROW, I'll def have to use some 2x10 or 2x12 to help with the clearance.

Here's what I'll be using:

I want to believe that this will work out for you.

I helped a buddy years back transport his 993 on one of these. Make sure it's balanced correctly on the trailer due to the engine being in the rear or you will get sway. We went over a thousand miles with no issues.

Reverse onto the trailer and painter tape to protect the "front facing" rear.

^^^ This is exactly what we did. Back the car on the trailer.

Cover the rear with that "temporary clear bra" film. Also, if you're not fully versed in ratcheting down a 993, get ahold of a local 993 track junkie to show you the "ropes". Be sure to check the straps at every stop to be sure they're tight.

I used one of these with my 993. I didn't have to back on the trailer, the trailer balance was spot on and sway was not a problem for me with my setup driving straight on. Just watch your exhaust tips and front clearance and tongue weight as that is just as bad as too much weight out back. Just be aware that if you back on you might have to climb out of the passenger side door as the fender only folds down on the left side of the trailer if your backing on it will be on the passenger side not the drivers. Definitely try to get a newer version of the trailer...its much nicer and easier to get the 993 on and off without boards depending on how low yours is. I had an older version of the trailer and while it worked it wasn't the greatest. I also bought some the cling wrap u haul sells and wrapped the front of the car after cleaning it thoroughly. Bring your own straps and know where you can tie them on the car. I used the strap system on the trailer as a secondary hold downs, you can see them on the wheels.

In addition to minimizing sway, this is also for tongue weight. The tow vehicle has permissible tongue weight range, should be in the manual. You need to position the car so as to be in the permissible range.

Looks like it has a surge brake. Just keep in mind for braking purposes you have an extra 4500-5000 lbs.

No general issue at all. This is my base transportation to the track since November last year. Cannot justify buying a trailer, maintain it and pay for storage if I use it 6-8 times / year. My car is RS height and I am using race ramps and some wood in the front of the trailer to clear the lip. I have an F150 as a tow vehicle and there was no sway at all. Just make sure that you do not get the old "orange version". Needs to be the silver one. Here are some pics:

I made mudflap extensions out of coroplast and used Gorilla tape to attach them to my trucks existing mudflaps for extra protection when I used a Uhaul trailer to pick up my 914. No rock dings on the car but quite a few in the extensions. For coroplast I just bought a couple for sale signs at the local Ace.

Thanks for all the great input! This will be my fifth (and hopefully) last trip . First one last Jul to move wife and kids, then first car load over the holidays after we closed on the house, then the 89 928s4 in January, then the 26ft U-Haul towing the Highlander two weeks ago... if I never see I10 for a long while, I'll be a happy man.

With Uhaul trying to send me 1hr away to pick up the truck and trailer, I opted to go with Penske instead. Turns out, they were cheaper by $400! The trailer seems to be lower than UHaul's as are the wheel wells; I am able to open the doors without issue.
On the road tmrw morning so if you see me on I10, say hello!

You will be fine , I tow this car from Kansas to Colorado and back to Texas , I tried hauling it both ways and I felt more comfortable with the rear first ...

Opo, the second picture (993 facing forward) is much better. In the first picture, you can see how much tongue weight there is based on the tow vehicle's rear squat. When I trailered my 993 around, I found that the door handles were the mid point of the car and I always centered the door handles between the trailer tires. Towed thousands of miles like that.

OP, safe travels! Good to know about the Penske trailer!

Didn’t think about Penske...good to know. That trailer looks much better than the U-haul trailer. Good luck and safe travels to all.
