991.2 GTS to 993
Good afternoon fron the UK.
Has anyone gone “backwards” meaning I currently have a 991.2 GTS and am thinking of going to a 993.
In short - I always wanted a 911, always wanted a new 911. So last year was in the fortunate position to spec and order one. Now I absolutely love it, Sapphire blue, all the mod cons, quick as stink. But can’t help wonder if this is the “Real” Porsche experience? I have a fully loaded Q7 to drive in the week which also has all the mod cons so getting in a modern 911 doesn’t feel that much different to any other modern car if you know what I mean. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a superb car but can’t help thinking im missing something.
I love the look of 993 (really love the singer style wide body retro look 964 too)
Here’s the point -
Would I miss the speed
Would I fit (6ft 3, 250lb)
It would have to be a good one, in uk good 993 cost same or more than new GTS or would you go low mileage that needed work? (Which I don’t have the skills to do)
Anyone done this? Any regrets?
Thoughts please?
Simon

Since this is a 993 forum, everyone here is going to tell you that yes, the 993 is the "real" 911 experience, and of course you should get one. But the only way you can know if it's right for you is to drive one.
I have a 993 and a 991S, and they are very, very different driving experiences.

Drive one!!! Many have gone "down range" from luxury to basic with many different cars, and not just Porsche. They become used to comfort, ease of drivability, etc. and eventually find that the car may be too noisy, rides hard, too much work to drive etc. The newer the Porsche, the less connected you become with "driving" the car, relying on computers to save your behind in case of over aggressive driving.

Interested to see where this discussion goes.
I'm in the similar boat, have a 997.2 C4S and waiting for GT3 allocation that may never come. So thinking to go with the long time desire and pickup a 993 or 993TT instead. Have only driven 997 and 991 generation cars. I like everything about the 993 thus far except the price. I'm going to try driving them before forming a complete love for the car. If I am thrilled with the drive then it's the usual used car buying stuff after that.

The modern Pcars are certainly a leap in comfort, ease of speed, and features. I was surprised how compliant the 991 felt ,even with 20" tires and what I thought was minimal rubber, when driving on our crappy Bay area roads. As a daily driver, I'm not sure I'd use the 993. For lack of a better explanation, there's just less of a buffer between you and the machine and the car comes through in a more raw experience. It's less 'comfortable', louder (although the Fisters might have something to do with that ) and it grabs more of your attention in terms of input and output in the driving experience. That's what makes the 993 a bit more of an event. See if you can arrange a back-to-back experience by trading for a few hours with a 993 Porsche owner...there's probably a few out there that are wondering what a more modern car feels like as well .

I can only add make sure you drive one that has been sorted and maintained, preferably an enthusiast for a true representation.
These cars are old and if you drive one say with the old stock suspension / monroe shocks etc you could be in for a huge let down.
I've come from newer models and that was 7 years ago. The 993 hits the right spot for the old school driving experience (not as raw as g-series and prior) along with beautiful design for me.

Regarding your size and if you will fit - it's more to do with your proportions. I'm 6'5 but quite even between legs and torso & I fit in pre-996 911's almost perfectly (more comfortable than many other cars I've owned). If you have a long torso, I've heard that it can be a squeeze.
Regarding everything else - only you can decide by driving a good example.

That is such a hard question. The two cars are so different. I had two prior 993s and sold a first generation Boxster S to get another 911 Porsche. I went in with an open mind and looked at every thing from early 911s to 991.1 turbos to 991.2; all cabs. For me it was back to a 993. For me they offer the right look, power and rawness of Porsche. My first 993 was a daily driver and made going to work much easier. Drive a nicely sorted one only if you're sure you want to made the change. It will grab you. Oh, will it ever.

I had a 997 for a few years prior to my 993.
I did not like all of the electronics and the car felt big,
I can work on the 993, it's much smaller, and the build quality is a lot better.
The sticker price on each car was the same, but 21 years apart - not the same quality.

Today's corporate leaders only care about profit, and it's reflected by the (lack of) quality of goods and the absence of quality customer service.

Thanks for the replies. I’m hopefully off to Porsche club meet in the morning (weather permitting)
Might see if i can sit in a couple at least to see if I fit. Will see what’s around.

I have a 991.2 GTS that I picked up after jumping into my first Porsche with the 991 Turbo and asked exactly the same question after a track day, what a "proper" 911 experience was like. The Turbo was just so easy to drive at speed and I really wanted to improve as a driver instead of having the car do everything for me. Ended up getting a 993 as well
My impressions comparing the two aren't that representative of the typical experience given that my 993 has a bit of work done to it — suspension, RS interior, shifter, seats, but most notably a taller 1st gear with a 8:33 final drive. The gearbox is super short and really fun to drive around town. Things like the size of the car, how nimble it feels, and the sound of the engine all contribute to the car feeling more special to me than the 991.2 GTS even though the GTS is much, much faster and more comfortable. The shorter gearing helps quite a bit, to the point where it starts to, at least for me, make up for the huge difference in power. My 993 is at the point now where I could daily it but I have to do a certain amount of work to drive it, something I just don't feel in the 991.2 — clutch is heavier, car is noisier, getting into and out of a bucket seat. I love the feeling that this gives but the 991.2 is generally more livable, though again this isn't something that a typical 993 owner may deal with.
Generally speaking, the mods to my 993 really help to close the gap between the two cars for me even though they're both pretty different.

good thread you posted up.
We have a few cars and we drive them a good bit of miles each year. The 991 GT3 is stupid fast and seems to only get faster the more I drive it. But the 993 is unparalleled in its own experience. The 993 at 50mph on a back road with the windows down is pure pleasure. Whereas the 991 is not. If we had to go down to one Porsche; it would be the 993.
I recommend you plan to own both cars someday.
