Bearing bought the farm. What’s the best option these days? Keeping the car forever so want the best option for long term.

That storage damn well better be secure!
Years ago I needed to replace my alternator. Sunset could not source a new one so I purchased a remanufactured one through them. It's been fine.

There's a Bosch reman, which the local air cool shop has had big problems with, the Porsche reman which SUPPOSEDLY is good or a new one. Sonnen had the best price several weeks ago, just went through this.

Bosch reman is absolute garbage. Had one of them fail on me after a couple of months of use. It's not actually a rebuilt alternator -- it is a fixed alternator. They take a core and fix whatever caused it to be a core, and then sell it as reman.
Get your alternator rebuilt at your local auto electric shop. Make sure they replace all the wear items (bearing, brush packs, etc).

I strongly second Churchill's comment. Have your stock unit rebuilt. In fact, the bearings aren't hard to replace as a diy. The part numbers have been listed in other threads.

I would look for a qualified local shop that will rebuild YOUR alternator. Tell them you want new bearings, new voltage regulator, diodes, etc.... Also bench tested, warranty,etc...
Good Luck!!!!

In my experience the only things to go are bearings and brushes if you don't have a local shop your familiar with find one on line they can likely rebuild it for a few hundred bucks, even the reman on FVD is like $650 and new almost $1200 I think I saw , whew ! Stiff Bert

Looks like I'm in the market for a new alternator as well. I really like the idea of the local rebuild, however, the triple-square inner shaft is in pretty nasty condition. And I think I know why - the nut holding on the pulleys is completely frozen and has shown no inclination to budge even after PB Blaster, lots of heat, and a few taps. (Admittedly I haven't helped the shaft condition in my attempts, but it was in very rough shape from the start.) This was my first attempt at belt replacement in the two years I have owned the car, and it is NOT going well.
Would a stripped shaft mean my old alternator will not be accepted as a core in exchange?
