Airbag warning light stays on
Would love some input on this one. I just finished changing all of the instrument bulbs/lighting (except of course the CEL, airbag, and remote locking bulbs) to LED. The final product looks awesome btw. In the process however I removed the steering wheel and airbag (per the technical forum found at pelican parts) in order to remove the tachometer. And yes I read all of the posts and Tore's input on removing the tach without taking off the steering wheel but I thought in the long run it would be easier and cause less potential damage to the guage. In the process of reconnecting I needed to turn power on and off to be sure all of the warning lights were on and working correctly. Things were connected incrementally.
Did id I screw up the airbag circuitry? I'm hoping that my mechanic can use his tool to reset the warning light?

Pretty common occurrence - ask me how I know! Just the airbag diagnostic routine doing it's job. If the bag is not connected on power up, it sets the warning lamp. This is not an OBD tool reset situation - only way to reset it is with the proper scan tools as noted.

Can anyone with a Duramatic tool, who has personally reset the airbag light, please verify that it can be done?
To the best of my knowledge, only the PIWIS, PST2, or Bosch Hammer are capable of resetting the airbag light when tripped.

All the Porsche tools can read and clear the fault code, as well as the Rennlist Scantool Windows freeware with proper serial OBD adapter.
However, if the fault is still present, the fault code will reappear and the light will go on again.

Tore

Sorry to hijack here, I too have the airbag fault recently. Nothing changed mechanically to suggest it was from a modification or repair.
I did some research and it suggests to "test" the air bag circuit for faults. Does someone have the procedure for that? I agree that clearing the fault is a way to mask the symptom, but may not address the root cause of the fault to begin with...

Thank you for the info, Pervy and Ivan!
I have the Durametric Enthusiast tool and was never able to reset a tripped airbag light; but granted, this was with the previous Durametric software version and not the latest 6.xx, available on the Durametric site.
Also, I have either a 3 spoke wheel from a Boxster or 996, with a clock spring that was purchased separately. I know...lots of variables here!
I recently purchased a PIWIS KTS650 tool, and easily reset a tripped airbag light on a gentleman's 964... however, the main purpose of the tool is to be able to exercise the ABS and ABD systems in the car, in order to flush the waxy buildup that will occur within the braking system.

Will your tool work to clear the airbag light on an OBD-II (USA 1996) vehicle?

I have a working condition 996 clock spring anyone can just have. You'll have to solder your own airbag connector onto it, since I harvested it for my momo but it was working fine on removal.

Later 993 models were fitted with a 996 airbag control unit which is not supported by the scantool software, (nor the Bosch KTS301 Hammer) I have had reports of this in '97 and '98 models.

Scantool was made by a Rennlister primarily for use in the 964 and early 993 models. I guess it will work fine in your car.

I just looked at my clock spring and it has a 996 part number. My 993 is a 97. Not sure if it was ever replaced or not as I don't have a record of it in my maintence folder.
I found your scantool on your website. Are you saying the one your have hosted does not support the 996 version of the clock spring?
What do you suggest we do here if we have this configuration?
