Default 993 to GT3 Touring...

I have owned my 993 for nearly 3 years now and have loved every moment of it. Over the years I have devoted a lot of time and money into tastefully modifying my 993 into my dream spec but I just as many others are guilty of the grass is greener syndrome and am considering switching it up a bit. I am considering a change and ordering a GT3 Touring in GT silver metallic with carbon bucket seats that is otherwise very low spec. I know these are very different cars but with my 993 being a low spec Arctic Silver with manual transmission a new low spec GT silver with 6-speed GT3 touring could be an interesting change of pace with a more modern rendition of my 993. Please help me play devils advocate to make this decision. For reference here is a link to the configuration I would likely order with the basic performance options and a bit of personal touch:

I appreciate all of your input!

Saw one of these last weekend at a Porsche event, GT silver with sport buckets. Absolutely gorgeous car. I'd be the devil sitting on your shoulder saying, go for it. You can't go wrong with a GT3.

Before you step off the cliff on the Porsche "order board", might want to check in with Fremont Porsche on what's available and what is considered an allocation........

The allocation should not be a problem as I have a great relationship with a dealer and this idea has been discussed for quite some time. The biggest problem is how much I would miss my 993!

If you can get an allocation at mrsp, then I really don't know what your hesitation is. You'll always be able to find a 993 if you want another.

The manual GT3t for me is the most enticing new Porsche I can remember. I'm anxiously awaiting news from my dealer on a potential allocation slot but I'm not holding my breath.

I sold my 993 and purchased at GT3t (sapphire blue). Totally different driving experience. I agree that you could sell your 993, buy the GT3t, drive for awhile, and then get back into a 993. A low spec GT3 t should hold it's value pretty well.

I don't think the cars are really substitutes, I miss my 993, but I enjoy the GT3t. I agree if you can get an allocation, go for it!

How much have you driven a 991? If you haven't been able to drive a 991 very much, I suggest trying to drive one as much as you can. I owned a 87 911 for almost 15 years and went to a 991. Not a GT3 so very different car but as I'm sure you know, the 991 is big in comparison. It really is a GT car vs a sports car in my opinion. My 991 was well set up with manual tranny, pasm sport suspension, etc and and I had no complaints about the car itself but for me, it was just a nice car. I thought it drove bigger than it was as well. I really like the look of the 991 but found myself not driving it much just because it wasn't the same as an air cooled sports car. I had it for almost two years and sold it to get a 993. Now have a 97 Arctic Silver/Black C2 that will probably be my last porsche.
If you're tracking every chance you get, the GT3 would be the car but if this is a daily/weekend car to drive some nice roads, you may miss the 993.

The Porsche Driving Exp in LA has a GT3 experience. Might want to do that to help decide. I did the GT4 last year and it was a great time.

I will echo what others have said. You should drive a 991 gt3 and see how you like it. Maybe it is exactly what you want/need in your life but it will feel nothing like your current car.

By the description in your signature, your car sounds like an ideal 993. The 991.2 gt3 is a different league, but finding another 993 like yours would be challenging, I imagine, should you change your mind.

GT3 touring makes zero sense to me. At least, reg GT3 looks kinda cool with that wing.

I’ve been in a couple GT3s as passenger on the track...and it actually made me not want that car. It’s fast, but kinda boring once you get used to the speed.

The only reason to have this car is if you want to have faster lap times without much effort (because you dont’ have time and or don’t want to spend time developing as a driver) or you are such a good driver that you can actually take advantage of the the whole car, at which point you might as well get a race car, which would be many times more exciting.

For the street, modern base 911 is more than adequate with excpetion of drag racing people on highways, which is stupid the in first place.

I have spent a good amount of time on the Porsche website lusting over the spec of my dream gt3 touring. If I could own any new car that would probably be it. I would go for it, I don't think you will lose money on it.

If it were me and going with the GT3, i would 100% paint to sample. Good luck with your decision.

If you can actually get one at MSRP, there is no doubt you should get one. What you hear is they are going much above MSRP (especially in Canada by easily as much as $50K). This is the closest thing you will get a 911R, I've yet to drive a new GT3 but reviews are nothing but positive. Although big in size, I will admit the overall proportions are right and lines are on it are very attractive.

Go down to LA and drive one on the Porsche track, then make a decision. Many have moved on beyond the 993 and have regretted their decision. Better to be able to own both but then the issue is storage and $$$. Surely, someone local to you may have a 991 that you could experience (West Rennlist) or find one CPO'd at a dealer and test drive.

To each his own. Three years is probably not long enough to get bitten by the air-cooled bug. I started with a 911SC in 1982, then only moved on to a 993 because I totaled it (otherwise I probably would still have it). Have had my 993C4S for 15 years now and would never think of parting with it. I find the new 911s nice, but, not for me.
